I am a real school phobe I was driving through town today at 3pm and the secondary school was kicking out what the heck happened to 9 til 4 for the over 11s It is a bloomin nightmare and they complaint they cant get the education in in the time allowed and give masses of homework perhaps if they were in school long enough they wouldnt need so much homework Homework is another pet hate Kids under 11 dont need it and it is an imposition They should be learning about the world around them by doing projects involving learning about nature and the natural world instead of doing silly homework out in the fresh air and getting exercise Repeat years is another one what is the point in making bright kids repeat the last year in primary just because they have finished all the stuff a year ahead now that does lead to boredom and disruptive behaviour

Ha join the club sometime! Our local senior school seems to chuck out earlier as the week progresses! 3.15pm on Monday becomes 2.30pm on a Friday! Sainsburys is a nightmare - you can't go before you collect the kids from primary, or after, as both times it is swamped with senior school pupils. The senior school I want to send my son to doesn't end until 3.45pm. I went to the same school and thought this was normal! Clearly not....
Totally agree on the homework - see thread in General Discussion about this very topic!

You perhaps should find out what time schools start before complaining they come out early! I started high school at 8am and finished at 3pm. I finished early on a Tuesday (2.30) but this was because we only had half an hour for lunch rather than an hour.
This meant we still had the same amount of class time as you would have done if they ran 9am to 4pm!
To many people complain about the educational system these days, why not be glad we have a bloody education system instead of complaining about it!

The high school I hope Cerys will go to also starts early- the bus picks up from the village about 7:50. The finish time varies through the week, but early finishes allow the kids to get involved in after school activities while still giving them time for the mountains of homework they have to do...

No, I know my local high school starts at 9am and finishes either at 3pm or 2.30pm depending on the day. Now I don't know the length of break times or lunch, it may be shorter, but it does appear these students are in school for far shorter a time than the local primary, and other secondaries in the area. It is not the best school around.........

My problem is the mothers (and some fathers) who insist on double parking down my road so that I cannot get to my house...or even parking on my drive. God help my elderly neighbours if ever they need to call an ambulance during the school rush hour as it would be impossible for them to get through. What I find so amazing is they are primary and junior schools and most of the children live on the estate so the parents coud walk to pick the children up.

My secondary school started at 8:30 and finished at 3:15, however, you were expected to attend enrichment till 4:15 3 days a week. The primary school I went to started at 8:25 and finished at 3:45!! But please don't moan the school day is too short, especially for the year groups sitting examinations, my coursework often used to leave me sat in school till 6pm some days! So god help me if i'd been stuck on timetabled lessons for any longer.

I think it means extra work, some places expect you to essentially do homework within school time.... I know one local secondary where Weds pm is non-timetabled, they use it for homework and sports

I'm sorry, but do you not think they have enough on with revising, GCSE's beginning in Year 9 now, to have to stay at school longer to suit you? Oh and when do the over 11s get their hobby time then? Is it not important for older children to be out in the fresh air? my god. Get a grip! I'm with the person who said you should be thankful we have a proper education system - do you not have anything worth moaning about?!

Oh dont get me started on driving kids to school it is a real pet hate of mine and yes I know the argument about parents having to work and it takes time bla bla bla but if the children over age of 8 were allowed to walk home in groups parent could be at home instead of driving. I understand the needs of kids to be protected from traffic but with enough crossing partols it would be possible for the bulk of kids to walk. As to the dreaded boogey man getting them it is absolute nonsense media created panic that give rise to over protected kids It is extremely sad for a child to lose their life or be harmed in anyway but it is rarer than them being killed/injured strapped in the metal box that the parents drive around in an people dont think anything about it

Yes the poor kids that dont get a chance to learn due to the inadequacies of modern teaching and are not actually capable of benefiting from such an educations system and parents that dont give a stuff about their kids education plenty things to moan about Yes kids are pressurized and pressurize themselves if they are interested it is large number that still leave school with little or no education unable to read and write that I am sad about

What on earth is 'enrichment'? It's anything from extra revision/catchup sessions, to extra curricular activities, 'fun' clubs and DofE sessions. ;D

Wow I can't believe some schools start so early 8am!!!!! My daughters primary school is 9 till 3.30 and i think the high school nearby is 8.45 to 3.10 . We are told the idea behind that is that there will be less traffic if they stagger the times than if they finished at the same time.

They start early and finish earlier as it has been proven that childrens concentration lapses as the day goes on.

Due to the local primary school to me being very good and popular and over-subscribed, it has a very small catchment area. But still parents drive their children to school and then park on the zig zag lines before the zebra crossing!

Mine are at primary school and this starts at 8.50 and ends at 3.15. My daughter will start secondary school in September and they start at 8.50 and finish (I think) at 4pm, each day. Personally I would love them to stay a bit later sometimes to do their homework so that I didn't have the struggle of getting them to do it. At least when they were home that would be just that home, rather than somewhere to do more school work. An early finish on one day would be handy for winter riding though!
