I have been trying to get my mare on the bit for quite some time, and somone told me to sponge the reins and hold on a leg, now i rode this a few times but due to certain circumstances i havnt been on her for a while, So I have had a memory blank to which leg it was Im pretty sure it was the inside leg but dont want to be schooling her wrong so could someone point me in the right direction? Or if anyone has other ideas on how to soften her and bring her on the bit then please do share. ;D Thanks in advance.

I don't know what the person means by 'hold on a leg' and the expression 'sponge the reins' though used often is daft. You need a nice kind elastic contact and ride from back to front. However, first and foremost you need a supple horse that rides in a good rhythm, you also need a good instructor to assess you and your horse.

Ride inside leg to outside hand. Though you will need to be supporting with both legs and both reins, and you will need to get you mare active, and working from behind. The horse should come round from your seat more than anything else, and certainly not from being forced with your hands. Really you need an instructor on the ground giving direction. Even when you know what you are doing, having eyes on the ground are invaluable. Good luck
