I was just wondering what opinions people had on showing with sarcoids? My pony has one on its chest and I'm currently waiting for treatment. Are they seen as a blemish? I know they're unsightly and I'm considering just giving up on this season, but my pony is looking good (if I do say so myself!) and wondered if this would hinder our chances massively? Can any judges shed any light on this for me. Thanks.

I would get on and show anyway for the experience and pleasure of it, sticking to local shows, agricultural shows and the like. If I thought the pony had real HOYS potential, or whatever, then I would steer clear of bigger shows until the sarcoid had been treated if it was very visible.
My own pony was treated with the Leahurst cream in January and although it worked the sarcoids were a mess after treatment until they dropped off, so when you do start treatment, if that is the method you are using, be prepared not to show as things can get quite unsightly. My pony has developed some more sarcoids since being treated and I am now using Thuja cream and tablets bought on recommendation from a thread on horsegossip, search below and you will find it. I started the Thuja treament a week ago and already the sarcoids are shrinking, without the sort of mess and discomfort caused by the Leahurst cream. I figured it was worth giving the Thuja a try before subjecting the pony to the Leahurst cream again.

I am waiting for the Liverpool cream to arrive at my vets, it should be here soon. I understand that the after effects can be quite nasty but we are booked in to a county show shortly and I'm undecided of what to do! I could go to a show before-hand and see what the judge says there. It's not my livelihood so I'm not too concerned with what people may say, but I wonder if it worth it for potentially getting a rosette.

I wouldn't start treatment untill after the summer, with flies etc. My mare had a nodular one on her chest, about the size of a peanut and it never got mentioned. For now I would try the thuja cream/tablets then treat at the back end of the year if there is no change

The vets had a meeting regarding it, taking into consideration the time of year, but they decided that it would be the best thing to do - so I'm following their advice really I said I was happy to wait until the Autumn as I could still claim on my insurance.

As sarcoids can be the result of a suppressed immune system you could also consider feeding a supplement such as Immuplus .

Thanks flee I'll have a look into that. I've been told that Echinacea is good too?

Hi have just read your post, i had a pony who had one on his eye, and while we waited for the vets to decide an old man told me to take a hair from his tail and rap it round it lump and keep doing this. must of been around a month but when vet come to say yes they would treat it with the cream, it was off not a mark left, this will not hurt or mark your horse its worth a go that was in 2006 and is still free to this day no more has come up.

'Necking' a sarcoid , as described above , either seems to work brilliantly or else is a total disaster . The problem with sarcoids is that intervention can actually stimulate the growth and make things a zillion times worse . As I said before , my first instinct would be a non-agressive approach ie. to support the imune system and give the body a chance to fight the virus ( because that's what it is ) and heal itself. Also recall reading somewhere that horses with sarcoids are often found to have an overly acidic hind gut so feeding something like Pink Powder might help .Also heard fantastic things about thuja , both as a supplement and as a topical cream .And most of all - have a little patience and don't panic. Some horses seem able to fight them off quickly , some take longer , but it's one of those conditions where people hail the last supplement/cream/wart whisperer that came near their horse as The Cure when the sarcoid could well of been disappearing of it's own accord .

I had 3 ponies with 'sarcoids' - Liverpool cream was recommended for all 3 but by the time that Dr Knottenbelt had replied to my vet 2 had cleared of their own accord & have never returned. In view of this I am reluctant to use the cream on the 3rd & have started with the Thuja tablets & cream.

I have seen horrendous scars, scabs, and a tail lost from liverpool treatment! Sorry but personally I would not put it anywhere near any horse of mine! I would always try the natural way or ringing/ necking

Not all sarcoids are suitable for ringing, continue to follow your vet's advice and do not use anything else in the meantime. We really do not know better than your vet and certainly would do well to bow to the professional judgement of Proffessor Knockenbelt who developed the liverpool cream as well as other treatment.

I ringed it...it was the most stupid thing I could ever do! It came up in a huge swelling and it would be something I would never do again unless the vet did it.
Thank you for all your advice, I started with a homeopathic approach using essential oils but its not really worked, I also tried Sarc-ex. After I banded it I got the vet to come out because I have come to the end of my tether, so I will be sticking with the Liverpool treatment. I may try this alongside something that boosts the immune system.
But does anyone else have experiences of showing with them? Apart from the ones who have cmmented.

If you have a small nodular sarcoid on the chest then why not. I am not a judge but one judge's opinion will differ from another. What I would do is up my game in all other respects, particularly schooling and treat myself to more lessons. Then turn pony out beautifully, not one hair astray, forget the sarcoid, enjoy and if you really do make that extra effort, I think it will more than make up for a nodular chest sarcoid.

banding it would make it swell it will get worse before it gets better. Be prepared for a scar and no hair growth with Liverpool cream.
Try Germoline (spelling) the old fashioned pink stuff it worked a treat on one of ours. You just need to keep putting it on as often as possible.
We qualified RIHS & HOYS with a large sarcoid!

we have a little SHP with a sarcoid on his belly. I have been really upset as it is my daughters last year on him, and we felt we couldn't show him seriously this year. This has been a very encouraging tread form that point of view BTW, my vet has recommended that we not do any veterinary treatment on it until the winter as it can become such a mess.

Hi, after reading all the great things about the Thuja tablets and cream I’m going to give it a go. How many tablets should I be giving my 16’2 horse?
