Does anyone have any ideas to work a naughty pony? She's in season and has been turned away for quite a while. She used to lunge but now finds this boring. Currently unable to ride due to present situation. Freaks out at long reining, so not an option. Okay at free-reining, but stops listening after a while. Hates sticks & whips. Getting bolshier as each day goes by, so despartely searching for an option. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks

Are you doing lots of varied work on the lunge, jumping etc. Could your lunging technique be improved by having lessons, maybe taking her out away from home for a lesson to make things more interesting. How about having an IH Rep in to suggest some in hand work which will also improve the manners. She can't be in season all the time so each day she might get better.
Is she turned out with company, 24/7 would be best. In which case, as she doesn't have a rider, is it essential she is exercised outside of her field environment at all for the time being?

lunging bores me. imagine what its like for the horse round and round and round and round zzzzzzz. when lunging i always change rein after a couple of circles, this can be shortened into changing every half circle after time, make things varied, move around the areana. i m amazed how many people just stand in one spot

Why not walk her out along the lanes and bridleways for some variety

Thanks for all your suggestions. brindlerainbow, yes I have taken her for walks but she hates traffic & cows so can't go far & there are always boys in the field by our lane, so she loses interest in me & what we're doing and decides she would rather flirt with them! brookviewequine, it bores her really quickly which is why working her is getting to be a problem... sageandonion, she loves jumping and while I was riding her she would jump anything! However, she gets so excited at fences and I'm trying to keep it quiet and get her to listen. I have had lunge lessons from an instructor on our yard and she is turned out with a herd, in which she is the lead mare, 24/7. If you cut down her feed or leave her in the field she pulls shoes off, which is what she has done today! She is really a baby, only just 7, and very green but won't let anyone but me ride her! We have tried but she just charges off with them and has a bucking fit. Thanks again for all your suggestions.

She is young and green but she's not really a baby is she? It sounds as though she's getting away with murder to be honest. She shouldn't be able to choose who rides her, if she's a riding pony then it's her job. You say she's the Alpha mare in the field , well she's trying to be the alpha mare out of it by the sound of things. I think you should find a competant rider who won't be put off by her tantrums.

I'm afraid I'm in agreement with Flo1. Have you looked at her diet? We have a mare that was very bolshy and arrogant, she was on a very high sugar diet which sent her off her head. We changed this and have noticed (finally) a difference. She loves her work but also gets bored easily so we vary it. She's out 24/7 too which helps. Maybe try just turning her loose and sitting with her, she might bolsh about but will eventually calm down (it's a method similar to join up). She does sound like she is dominating you and this needs to be reversed, ignore bad behavious and praise good. Maybe clicker train her? Some horses constantly need to have an active mind and lifestyle otherwise they stress. She obviously isn't happy about something. I find that being repetitive is the key to my horses, maybe others will disagree. You might get fed up with her tantrums but keep asking her to do what you want her to do until she does it without a fuss. It may take hours, or months but the key is to not give up. Horses are like children, once they learn that doing as they are told is easier than battling, they soon co-operate. Good luck x

She has a few little head issues. One for the kelly marks or similar people.
