My dartmoor gelding is now 9 yrs old, he was shown county level as a 4 yr old and did well, he always behaved impeccably. This year and towards the end of last year he has decided he does not want to stand still in the ring(in the line up and infront of the judge). He will always get a good pull in, but then will not stand still, he swings his bum round and does mini rears, he has also taken to swinging his bum on the judge! It is really embaressing and I don't know why he does it. I took him to a local RC show to see what he did and he was a gentleman, and stood still the whole time. I thought it was prehaps me being nervous that made him nervous too, but then he even did in in an in-hand class! Can anyone think of any reasons or anything I can try and do to stop this? Can't tell him off in the ring and it does not help anyway!

Was the RC class a lot smaller? I am imagining county classes are big? Perhaps he is either bored standing still for so long at county shows, or the sheer number of other horses in the ring are getting him excited. I think you should work on his behaviour in smaller classes first, then start taking him into the bigger classes and acclimatise him to the excitement of big shows.

The classes were the same sort of size, edenbridge last year he was awful, then romsey the next week good as gold. BSPS area show he was good, heathfield he was awful (I was actually sent out of the ring) ,Surrey county he was bad. South of england he was OK (only about 7 in class) but still tried to mess about a bit. I am struggling to realise why he does it, as it seems there is nothing really that sets him off. I thought It was the hounds, but he stood next to them out side the ring and took no notice.

Is there anything that may be causing discomfort to the pony...sore mouth/back etc? Is the rider sitting quietly, not fidgeting about? Must be so frustraing, I hope you get it sorted

has he been shown religiously since being 4? Could he be showing boredom with the whole routine of it?

Exactly my immediate thoughts. Do some other activities for a while.

Nope, shown as a 4 yr old and not shown again until last season, did a few years of other things. His back is done monthly and his teeth were done last month.

I have a pony with the same problem. Does anyone have any good advice that has worked?
