Yesterday we attended a local pony club show we had great time (didnt win but ponies went well) on returning home i noticed on facebook a local riding centres status asking what the show had been like and what the judges had been like. I sat and waited the slagging off of this show got under way. People complaining a shetland won a M&M class etc. It seems to me that there are soooo many people out there bad mouthing these small shows it really upsets me as this is where i started at local shows mainly show jumping it gave me a good grounding to move on to bigger things. I am worried that if these sheer nasty people keep pulling these shows down that are run by volunteers that people putting on these shows are going to loss interest and therefore stop having these shows. Most of these people bit*hing are only doing so because they have not won!! Sorry for ranting on prob making no sense but does this happen in your area or am i just surrounded by bit*hy people?

Why people can not just come enjoy the day with their horses and go home happy and thankful that these people take time out their lives to put on these show for them!

Absolutely nothing wrong with a Shetland winning an M&M class so no idea why people would complain.

Like I said before they clearly don't have a vast amount of knowledge on the subject but still complaining!
Sore loser giving local shows a bad name for no reason

I think it's just bad manners! Sure everyone likes to win or place but if the measure of having a "good day" is based on the colour of the rosette then go buy a batch from Ebay! Ungrateful and bad-mannered!

Just thought I'd add...a (very) young rider - maybe 6 or 7? on riding away from her class - sporting a blue ribbon, might I add, shouted to her parents...'That BLOODY judge, she must have been blind!' Lovely! If this is the future of local shows, who would want to be there/! x

People comment on facebook without thinking. Imagine how the owners of the shetland would feel if they too logged on and found that their pony was being slagged off! There is a lot of effort put into organising these shows and it is such a shame that some competitors have such a bad attitude!!!!

If I was faced with somebody complaining that a Shetland had won a M&M class I wouldn't know what to do to be honest .. whether to pity their ignorance or laugh at it?

all i can say is well done that judge for actually recognising a decent shetland as a breed and placing it accordingly rather than doing what most do and not see past the cute factor and sticking it down the bottom end because they have no idea what they are looking at!!!!! WELL DONE THAT JUDGE!

Judging at the local show's is not always the best or the easiest, judge's just need to remember to only say out loud positive comments, little kids who are just starting out need encouraging. Unfortunately you'll always get bad mannered people, at our local show recently some man was moaning because some of the ponies in a best turned out class were unplaited, what he wasn't knowledgable enough to notice is that they were natives! You'll never get rid of these people, just easier to ignore them.

local shows can be shark pools but they are great for starting off and I always support them as they will disappear if we dont but competing should be about fun!!! whether you do well or not always smile accept the judges decision whether you agree or not and there is always another day kids who moan id just stop them competing until they appreciate any rossette if you get one is bonus its taking part and doing your best and enjoying it . ive always had local ponies although have got a county pony for future and im dreading it as im sure ill get slated but ill still smile and so will kids

It really saddens me and as much as I love my internet forums I do feel that the amount of moaning about shows tends to put people off putting them on and even going to compete when they feel they wont be treated fairly. Please what is wrong with going to any level of show just for fun. Yes its great when you win. It is even better when you beat a producer but if you dont, go home count your blessings at having the best pony in the world and try again the next time

All around our area with the local shows there is always someone slagging it off when they don't win, personally my pony will never really go much further so I just enjoy the level I am at and even when I don't win. Everyone has got to start somewhere and I just feel that if they are going to slag them off thinking their ponies are the best (of course you will) and should have won then try them at a bigger show surely?

We have the problem round our way that people seem to bring their HOYS & RIHS horses to our local, NOVICE shows. This is so wrong, they treat it like 'working in' their unruly horses, when there are people just trying to have a little bit of fun & enjoy themselves. I have to say though, it is funny when you find out your (scruffy) little new forest that you put some effort into, has just beaten a £10,000 Barkway pony at your local. Fun =)

We have multiple HOYS/RI horses round our way and because they are 15hh and havent had them long they go into novice workers against all the 12.2hh young kids and wonder why they beat them? I have to say when I am in workers with my New Forest who didnt cost that amount of money I have to admit I have a sense of pride when I do beat thrm! Even if it is VERY rarely!!

What annoys me at local shows is when people presume you have a hits/rihs horse just because they are turned out to perfection and do good individual shows. I wish my horse was a hoys horse. He can hold his own in affiliated classes but never hoys qf but I've heard people moan about it.
I'm not being a Pot hunter I only do local to me county shows and have always supported the local riding clubs.
I sometimes think people use the 'it's a county horse' as en excuse when theres wasnt placed

There is a big difference between some one who has gone out to buy a horse to do showing and somenone who has bought a horse mainly to hack and occasionally show/jump/xc...
I run shows and must say our Fun shows have a great atmosphere - most people are glad to be out some where enjoying their horse. There will be an odd comment made by someone incorrectly because they don't understand what they are actually watching. Most when politely explained will usually be very nice people and soon change their tune.
To say affiliated shows (I run these too) do not suffer from the same would be false. Lets be exact we all know you want to come in the top whatever qualifying positions and with the increased money and effort that has gone into this level things are not always a bed of roses even panel judges have widely differing opinions/tastes.
As a show organiser I want a cross range of people I don't mind the top flight coming as long as they are in the right class afterall I need the entries and people need to see what they should be doing/aiming to do!
People should just think more carefully about their choice of words on these sites. Imagine as someone said you were the Shetland owner. Why spoil their moment. Constructive actionable criticism only please.
The judges for a local show above all need to be friendly and tactful with their comments + we expect them to have a very broad range of knowledge - most judges will have areas of strenght and other areas they get by in, however I don't want to find 3 different judges to judge one ring of a show where as a county level show will do this. If some one knows more of these great judges let me know I am always looking for more of them!!!

I have come across so many things in showing that have made me less competitive! I mean, a judge chosen by a committee member because they know them well? We don't stand a chance when said committee members daughter is in the class and follows the judge around the local shows to ensure red ribbons. No not sour grapes as I know my ponies have done their bit in the past 20 years and are now a bit stiff and old to go against these people and win...after all I now own veterans who only go for fun but I do feel for the genuine people who try so hard and especially those I have seen who are a better quality than said pony.
In the past ten years I have found some people use local shows not to support them but to just gain access to red ribbons without the effort. I will also say when said girl had a judge change at another local show she was placed further down the line and smacked her pony round the head on exiting the ring, telling her mother how it was the ponies fault! So in a way I can understand why her mother does what she does if it prevents the pony getting a beating every time it doesn't win!!
On the whole though apart from the odd person who dislikes losing the shows are meant to be fun and usually are. Thankfully not every show has people like this and I am sure it won't be long until people cotton on and she is removed for judge choices.

I feel like a right git now lol.
I have to say the local shows other than that are wonderful and very welcoming, I love going every month to our RC show where over the years my veterans have become part of the fixtures and fittings, i am proud of my girls as well who don't moan about their places as they accept unless they are in veteran classes they aren't in the running and it's just a bit of fun and something to work towards during the summer xx

At local level though, if you attend your nearest show, it is often hard not to know someone on the organising committee, or a steward or even the judge, because it is a small pool of people and as a lot of us know, it is a small world. I would not show under a judge personally involved in my son's training, but he has been under a lady who is a friend of a friend and who sometimes came onto the yard we were on, although she was not involved in teaching/training, she came to help her friend with heavy duty tasks.
I didn't know it was going to be her when I pre booked the class as there was a last minute change, and I didn't fancy wasting my money or disappointing my son on the day when I saw it was her in our ring. She gave him a fair place (not 1st) and made constructive comments, even though she knew the pony's foibles and habits. I don't think anyone suffered because I knew the judge - she rightly placed other pairings higher, and some lower and I think she acted impartially. No-one seemed to have any complaints anyway......

Sadly the woman I knew has recently been dropped from the RC committee due to complaints so I think she will now have to compete on a level playing field at long last.
