I use bent leg safety stirrups but have a left leg which sways and does its own thing. On my B it is fine as I can wrap my leg around him but on my D I feel like thelwell and my left foot sticks out so badly, it goes right through the stirrup and my foot jams in it. I am going to see if I can get a smaller stirrup but I have a feeling this is already the smallest. Any suggestions? p.s I must be able to go in the ring Thanks

I very much doubt the size of the stirrup is the issue, but more the way you are sitting, and taking the weight down the leg. Have someone who knows what they are looking for, stand behind you as you ride down the long side and see if you are straight, and watch you ride on both reins in walk, trot and canter and see if the leg draws up or you collapse at the waist on either side or lean, and why. Look at your horses shoulder from behind, is it level? Is the saddle flocking even? Is he less balanced on one rein and shifting you over? Lots of computations to work out as to why you are losing a stirrup in a consistant way.

armada I do slouch to the right as I can't put weight into my left leg. All the tendons and ligaments were damaged over 20 years ago and there is little power in the leg -it swings and putting weight down into it is extremely difficult. It wasn't too bad in my dressage saddle but on a show saddle, even with knee rolls it's a struggle. I have 2 show saddles (one flat, one with rolls) and it is worse in the one without rolls. I frequently ride without stirrups to lengthen my leg and improve my seat but in canter I lose it completely

my daughter has a weak leg that she can t use much when riding , it therefore slides back, i did for a while tie her stirrup iron to the girth with plaiting thread - no-on eveer noticed. I dont tend to do it now as she says she cant kick if iron is fixed!

take your stirrups up a hole see if it helps. they've been up and down more times than a window cleaner with a ladder ;D Using heather moffat stirrups and a different saddle (more dressage) so some improvement-will also be trying thread.

It sounds like, since your leg has been damaged, so has your position. If you're on a horse that you trust then, by all means, tie it with some easily breakable thread (because horses do unexpected things!). If you use it for quite a while muscle memory etc, will make your leg so that it stays in that position. Slowly take the thread off, so that you're using it one day & not the next, then after some time, you'll be able to ride without it! I know it seems like a pain & everything but my horse rolled on my leg one time & I had to under go the same situation. We're now back to normal though - serves me right for wearing beige jods in a muddy field! DGP

Try putting your stirrup up a hole only the side you loose it on.

Try putting your stirrup up a hole only the side you loose it on. Thanks for the advice -this does help to an extent and I rode like this for years but think (having seen the pics since starting showing a few years ago) it encourages the weight to go even further down the good leg. javascript:add(" ","") dapplegreypony - think the idea about muscle memory is good and one I haven't explored.

Swimming might help as its not weight bearing?

Gosh sorry to hear it. Other than discretely tying to saddle.as others have suggested can't think of anything else...
