I have just got a 6 month old collie dog who i was told was house trained and he isn't. Please could i have advice on how to get him clean in the house. He is very nervous and don't think he has had a very good start in life which isn't helping as he hear noises in the garden and bolts back inside. Any advice please.

take him out like you would a puppy in the garden - after every meal/sleep/play and every hour thats what were doing with our 12 week old pup and hes been dry all night from day 1!... we have never used newspaper (as he ate it..), but if needby use paper by the backdoor to encourage him to pee there if our pup had an accident we would pick him up mid stream and take him outside - never punish him!!, just a " ah ah, no" (nicely) and pop him outside 3 weeks on hes housetrained good luck

Echo the above. Also when he is doing a wee, have a word that you repeat, e.g. 'be quick' or 'busy' or some such, and say it every time he wee's, eventually he will associate the word with the act and you will be able to get him to do it on command, it's really useful when you're in a hurry! I can take millie into the garden, tell her to 'do wee-wee' and she does one for me! Collies are really quick to learn, lots of praise when he gets it right and he'll soon get the hang of it. Interesting you should say he doesn't like noises, as we had a border collie for years who hated noises, must be a collie trait.
