Hiya, This is probably a really stupid question, but whilst lunging with a pessoa on, can you canter your horse? I've heard somewhere that you shouldn't. I don't have any plans to, was mainly just curious. Thanks

Yes, but they usually find it very hard at first. Only attempt once trotting is well established, then just canter for a few strides at a time and build it up slowly.

I didn't think cAntering in a Pessoa was recommended ? I thought it was made for walk and trot only?

I was taught at college you can but build it up gradually make sure ur walk and trot is well balanced before taking up the canter and make sure you haven't got them to tight .

Hello, the pessoa does come with instructions, from memory I think it is walk and trot only that is advised in the long and low outlines (clips between the legs) and that you can build up to canter when you have raised the ropes up the roller - so that the clips are in a similar place as your hands. Check online or at a retailer to see if they still come with a printed leaflet. I trained with Dr Gail Williams years ago and she always recommended using it in trot work, gradually building up to pole work to help to strengthen the horses back, (my job at the time involved rehabilitating broken event horses.) I also trained with Gill Rose, who would never canter a horse on the lunge until it was going well enough in trot, and by well enough she meant with impulsion in a slow, loose trot with plenty of cadence, it was very rare that we cantered, lol! Hope that helps.

With a Pessoa, I canter my ponies as it encourages them to use their back muscles, but they quite tend to buck the first few times that they have the Pessoa on
