Since breaking my leg it seems everyone else is controlling what is done with my yearling with no regards to what I think, I saw him the other day and he is looking ok but not brilliant he looks underweight and thin he was stabled til his gelding 3 weeks ago been fed on balancer and chaff with haylage twice a day now he is out pretty much 24/7 but he has been bunged in a half acre field with two other horses and there is barely any grass yet there is loads other fields with grass with just the old horses in that aren't in work just retired or not used surely a growing young horse should need the grass more I was looking at some other yearlings online and none them look as underweight and thin as mine but if I try to say anything everyone gets snappy with me and as I am relying on them to look after him while my leg broken I feel I can't do anything but I want to show him in August as should be back on my feet but he isn't going to look right if nothing is done soon I feel stuck any ideas? I pay livery I expect the best for my horse not some scrappy little field when other liveries are getting better why is he treated differently? I just hate feeling he is been neglected and I can't do anything

Can you get a friend to help you manage his care more actively? Ie get down the yard a few times a week for you and insist on him being cared to your regimes? Heartbreaking for you I'm sure, good luck

You say you are relying on the others to look after him, this reads to me that you aren't paying for full livery or any extra help. I think that if I was paying for full livery I would be asking my yearling to be moved, but if I was just relying on good will of others then I would find it more difficult. Is he just turned away?? Doesn't come in at all?? Perhaps for the short term you could pay someone to care for him, or get your OH or family to go to see to him. That way you may be able to get him moved to better grazing??

It's my brother who is looking after him I pay £20 a week for stable and field which is good I know it's a friend who owns the place but I pay same as everyone else so surely he should get the same treatment I pay for brothers horse feed or other stuff here and there as a thank you for looking after him but he family and said it was never a problem, I sold one horse to make it easier for him as taking both mine on was too much this is why it feels hard to say anything his horses have got a huge amazing field full of grass and mine is stuck with the two overweight ponies in shoddy field

Give your brother a swift kick up the backside so to speak (know you can't ACTUALLY do it:) )
Its not good relying on others and must be frustrating for you. Stress you want him on more grass, make it plain what his care should be.
I left my ponies in the care of my brother for two days while I went to GYS last year. 3 lived out, 1 to be brought in and mucked out and fed. Did he do that? No!! He decided to open the gate so they could all be out together then opened the gate to the stableyard and left the doors open so they could go in if they wanted. The one I wanted in had never been out with the others for good reason, she would kick them and the gelding would terrorise her plus she gets fat on fresh air. I had visions of four ponies cramming into one stable and one hell of a kicking match going on. I tried to leg it from the GYS to sort them out (50 miles!!) but got stuck in traffic and had to give up and go back. My non horsey OH took pity and separated them (in a fashion). Brothers argument - horses should live out and she looks nice fat. I won't be asking him again.

In that case, I would be speaking to both brother and friend, and saying that you want you boy out in better grazing. Either with your brothers horses or what ever, you may even be able to cut your feeds down too, saving you money

He says he doesn't want him winding the mares up but he is snipped and has never been interested in them anyway he just likes meeting any new horse been a youngster but he quite happily has his geldings near the mares just so frustrated as I know my brother and he will fall out with me if I don't somehow hint it or go very carefully about it

Just don't want it to cause trouble as she is pretty good friends with my brother and can be but funny, she got really angry with me when broke my leg even though it was one of there horses that did it saying I shouldn't been wearing flip flops in the field which I wasn't and that I shouldn't have gone in the field well my colt had jumped in with the mares did she just expect me to leave him there while he impregnated all the fillies it's not like I was going to sue the place for damages it was just an accident they happen, I tried saying last night that I thought my yearling wasn't looking the best and they said its just cos he has just had his op but I haven't seen that happen with any my other colts surely they know he needs proper grass not be in the weight loss field with the ponies

They can be fertile for up to 6/8 weeks after gelding, does this have anything to do with him not being able to go in with the mares?

they do tend to run up anyway after being gelded, so he will need decent grass esp if hes a youngster. Problem is he will still act colty for a good 6 to 8 weeks and will harrass mares hence wny i expect they want him away. Do they not have a field just of geldings?

Yeah there is field of geldings next to the field of mares I wouldn't expect him to put him in with mares just somewhere with grass there is 9 fields I know some not in use due to resting but there has got to be somewhere better for him I considered moving him to a livery with grass just for the summer if they won't do something about it I think I may just ask if they still feeding my horse and if they say no I will say why not as he not getting any thing from the field due to the state of it pretty much but more politely
