Hi, haven't posted on HG for ages, as had a lot on.
On Tuesday evening one of my cats went out. She doesn't normally go out, but when the weather is nice, she likes a wee potter outside.. anyway, she then went missing for four hours, and eventually turned up, and in a bad way.
Tuesday 26th June
She was attacked by a dog, possibly a Staffie (according to the size of the wound and puncture hole).. she is currently in the PDSA Pet Aid Hospital in Edinburgh on Morphine and in an oxygen tent.. the extent of her injuries will be looked at tomorrow.... However I guess it's not looking too bad as she was still talking to me, and swearing at the vet on duty.
Wednesday 27th June
**UPDATE** Day 1
she has two options.... 1, she's as stable as she was when taken in last night despite being on regular pain relief, her xrays this morning that her chest bone is broken in 3 places and she's not stable enough to go through surgery, so PTS to end her suffering.
Option 2, can keep her on pain relief and re-asses in 24 hrs, the fact that she made it home AND crawled out the half cat carrier to get back on to the bed is amazing as the muscle damage in her leg is so severe she should not be able to walk on it at all. Vets are not worried about her leg, as this can be amputated if needed. the main worry is her chest cavity and the strain it may put on her lungs/heart.
am going for option 2 as she's fighting to stay with us. I hope to see her later.
I'm so glad she made it through the night...
Update two - same day
she is still critical but now stable. vet is waiting for the bruising from her lungs to go, and if she is still here/stable at that point then surgery may be an option, but he did admit he'd never seen such a brutally savaged cat still be alive after that kind of attack. She's now out of the oxygen tent, and breathing for herself.
She was so pleased to see me as I was her, she did all her usual things, use my hand as a pillow and want her neck/chin stroked while she just lay backed and purred
Thursday 28th June
Kendra had a comfortable night and managed to pee, but she failed to get up into the litter tray to do it. At 3pm I got a call to say that she has stabilised enough to go into surgery to fix her sternum. I am awaiting news of how that went.
She is out of surgery, breathing on her own and bloody hell, she really shouldn't be here.. After she was anaesthetised the true extent was revealed. They already knew that her sternum was in pieces, and that she had dislocations in her ribs.. They also found that her muscles had separated from one side of her spine right round where the rib cage should be to the other side of her the spine... The only thing holding her together was the unharmed skin. had there been a nick in the skin and air got in that would have been it.
Vets are totally amazed that she's here at all and at her will to live. Tomorrow she'll have more treatment to her leg wound. She is still very critical but stable. The next 12 hours are crucial
Friday 29th June
She's come through the anaesthetic, and has a chest drain in. vet hopes to remove this today. He still cannot believe she is still here, in the theatre they found minimal damage to her organs, which is amazing given the state of the rest of her. They hope to take her back to theatre this afternoon to do some work on her leg, which apparently extends all the way to her bum.
My cat should be dead. She should never have survived enough to get home, never mind get to surgery and continue to fight...
Saturday 30th June
She managed to eat during the night with the assisted feeding by syringe, no feeding tube needed now. She still needs work done on her leg, which they now think can be saved, but how much muscle is actually damaged I don't know..
Im going in to see her later.. can't wait.
