Speaking as a past hack breeder please go for as near TB as possible. There are now just to many ponies competing in small hacks and the whole type necessary for a hack is being lost.
A small hack should be able to carry the same weight and height of a MAN as can a large. Therefore, it should be a deep bodied animal with good bone, a huge shoulder, and a long elegant neck with a beautifully set on head to a fine throat.
Arab inluence is good in very small doses. It helps with the extravagent action, and elegance, but a hack should not show too much Arab and a good TB type back end and hocks is preferable. What stallion you choose to breed your hack, depends entirely on your mare, her type, conformation and temperament, but above all make sure it has good correct bone, movement and a wonderful front and temperament.
One of my best hacks was out of a TB mare by a 13.2 with a terrific TB background plus Holly of Spring movement. Do not fall into the trap of going for a pretty head, above all other things---------------Heads can be prettied up with a bridle, bad limbs with no bone and long cannon bones can't.

l Couldn't have said it better specialsparkle3. The small hack I bred who went on to win at HOYS was the other way round out of a 14 hand shp mare by Keston Tribune (going back to Holly of Spring), by a TB stallion by Blakeney. There are some very nice small TB stallions around if you look hard enough!

And the small hack I'm talking about was by Tribune's son Tribute. That family was sooo valuable to breeding. --------------there is still Dolphin Superstar, Tribute's son .I have bred an amazing hack by him, yet to go in the ring.------------probably one of my best.

Good old fashioned bloodlines, sadly slowly disappearing. Best of luck with your hack, with that fabulous breeding he/she should go far!

Sorry, the Superstar Hack is no longer mine, therefore I would not post a picture of him----------He will be seen in the ring with his owners soon enough. The Tribute was well known, and would compromise my anonymity.

My stallion Trifolio has bred some lovely hacks who have all had excellent results. Hi Fidelity, 2nd twice at HOYS is a small, as is Abbeys Finale. Classic Top Totty and Abbeys Fair Breeze are both large hacks and also both placed at HOYS.
I have a 2 year old small hack myself by him and out of a small TB mare. I prefer TB's and feel as smalls they are "small horses" rather than "large ponies".
He has also bred riding horses and hunters, it does depend on the mare, but they are all performers.

Ivy House Stables have some stunning suitable stallions, as does the Whalton Stud (based on the same shared site near Penrith) - well worth a visit to see the stallions, especially Mount Holly (TB) who is just breathtaking in the flesh

If I was breeding a hack I'd go for Dolphin Supreme or Dolphin Superstar depneding on my mares build. Both very sucessful hack sires but Supreme throws riding horses and large hacks too, (I worked for Pedley and Supreme was one of the stallions in my care (so was Tribute) and Superstar was one of the 1st foals I saw being born)

Hi i breed Hacks or try to : ).
I use my TB stallion who is 15.2hh and a very true to type Hack on TB mares and 14.2hh and we use our 14.2hh stallion on our TB mares but i do like the more National Hunt boned mares upto 15.3hh so they have limb to put to the pony so you dont loose depth and leg.
It depends on how your girl is bred but if she is a small herself i would go for a pure TB. All the stallions above are super. My boy stood at Ivy House Stables for 2 seasons but is now home to cover my own mares. he has put some really lovely stock on the ground and we have the 14.2hh stallion Whalton Highwayman who s stock on the TB mares is outstanding.
I hope that helps.

Specialsparkle3, I couldnt agree more with your first comment regarding hack types! Lets get back to how hack breeding used to be! The type is being lost!

Specialsparkle3, spot on with your statement, too many hacks are ponies, i agree keep as near to TB blood as you can, there are so many excellent TB stallions to use. My 15h Crown Gold mare out of a Funnyman mare has bred some beautiful animals and her last foal by Washington Postman is to die for but all little quality horses not big ponies..i do not like the fashion of show ponies in hack classes and i am aware that my next comment may not find favour with everyone but it is my opinion''' i believe one slight change in the words to hack classes to 'exceeding 14.2/148' for the smalls would bring about a huge change; 148 show ponies can still go in small SRT classes (but thats another dislike of mine too) type is diminishing in many classes in exchange for fashion and the obvious money... I am aware that 'multi-classing' is what a lot of us have to do to get the best value for travelling to a show but something does have to change and it is everyones responsibility i.e. judges, breeders, exhibitors and showing societies to strengthen the guidelines...however, i do think breeders are still breeding quality hack type animals but some judges are putting up ponies hence the trend...i believe judges have it difficult because they can only judge what is in the class! 'brick and a hard place' comes to mind... back to the original post...shop around over the winter, go and view lots of stallions, look at what they have produced, look at pictures of hack champions and then be honest with your own mare and where she is lacking choose a stallion that is strong in comparison to your mares weakness or fault..good luck you will need it breeding a true hack they are like 'Rocking Horse droppings' rare ;-)

If you had a full up 15.2 mare would you go for a smaller stallion? or would it be worth doing reasearch to find out which stallions throw smaller? Im worried about it going over height or is that not normally a problem?
