Can you pad the roof?? Or travel him with a companion so he's happier.

he isn't doing it when traveling. It's if he panics when we are unloading. I did think about padding the roof as when he's calm he has loads of room.

Someone told me that if they throw their head you should hold a balloon full of water above their head and burst it when they throw their head. Apparently they think they have hit their head and that water is blood and they dont do it again. Never tried it myself.

Totally panic the pony and could cause serious accident to pony and handler. Get a professional in to help you.

Use a poll guard - or make one from a large piece of sponge, my dressage horse did the same and we did'nt always use the lorry if travelling only one, so he wore one in the trailer and was fine loading and unloading wearing it, we had quite a high one, it reached almost to the top of his ears!

I should think if you burst a balloon full of water above the poor ponies head it wouldnt want to go in the trailer ever again

Well pleased to say. I padded the roof, and put a nice piece of foam in his Snuggy head and he is hopping on and off the box without batting an eyelash. I even took him to a show on my own at week end ;D. We spent the best part of 2 weeks (and more Polo's than I would like to admit feeding to one horse) and several bags of apples , a good 2 hours the first night just tempting him in, and every night after that he just got better and better. We just sat on the ramp and waited for him to join us . which eventually he did. Each day getting a little braver . We then started shutting the ramps and letting him get used to it a bit at a time. Some good advice from a friend was "leave some of his poop in so it doesn't smell strange" which seemed to work. I have always believed in time and patience with horses and this just proves how that works well. Not one head throwing incident since. Many thanks for all the advice, sorry but under no circumstances would have tried the balloon, I think that would have created rather more problems than it solved. So I am now a very happy mum ;D
