I would use a rug with a removable neck cover. On warmer days or nights take this off. Neck covers can rub a mane badly - but overheating will cause "shedding" of the mane, particlularly just above the wither!
I favour Amigo rugs., they are reasonable to buy, very durable and fit well. I bought a neck cover a size too big just to ensure no rubbing!! Even better is the Rambo Duo. Our connie wore a duo day and night last winter (we have 2 different weight liners so very versatile) and had a full mane from the beginning of the season. I took the neck cover off for warmer nights (above 5 degrees) and on dry, sunnier days. This rug also keeps him ultra clean!! I offset the cost of the rug by not buying a stable rug and the only other turnout he has is the ultra lite amigo (which we use as a stable rug in summer when not too hot- when we don't use any).

I second this. Premier Equine really good quality and price. Not very exciting colours but hey you can't have everything. I find that it is the removable neck part of a rug that rubs the mane so always use the combo rugs. Also I sewed some synethetic silk on the inside of rugs where it rubs the bottom part of the mane and it works really well.

Rhino or Premier Equine (haven't used PE myself but heard that they are very good.)
