It was disclosed today that it is impossible to maintain a reasonable standard of living on less than £37500 per year income before tax. Essentials include a 5 year old hatchback car a computer and a mobile phone. When asked outside a supermarket people seemed to think that was reasonable and some even thought it impossible to live on that level of income. I wish we earned that we could live in style personally we live on about a half of that

I think its all relative, I earn a decent salary but I have a decent sized mortgage to go with it too. I think that people live similarly on percentages, regardless of their salary (discounting the rich of course) I think that the portions of income divided between essentials of mortgage, cars, phones etc etc wont be very different at all.

Depends how many children you have and what stage of 'expensiveness' they are at. (is expensiveness even a word LOL??)
Mine have now gone past the stage where you can dress them in supermarket clothes etc., they don't have a lot of branded items but they do have a few bits and pieces. I took my youngest to the pictures as a treat at the weekend, £35 quid it cost me, I nearly passed out! We don't live a lavish lifestyle by any means but a nine year old and a 14 year old do seem to have a way of getting through the money!

This was the minimum for a couple with two children so I guess half without kids a home would be about right lol

I work 2 jobs but earn nowhere near that amount. Am a single mother and am somehow managing to pay the mortgage, keep a horse for me and pony for daughter and let her show. And no I don't use credit cards or loans!! Yes things are tighter than when I was with my partner who had a huge salary but at least now we don't take things for granted! So I think people can be happy on nowhere near that amount and have a good standard of living!!

We are in this bracket, we both work fulltime, 2 children, no tax credits, in theory we should have £600 spare each month after bills, food, fuel etc though it never quite works out that way!

I saw this... I'm not anywhere near that, but proud to say I have my flat, my horses (4) and I compete. and do it all out of my pocket! Spare money goes on them and show outfits, I get my clothes from supermarkets (nothing wrong with that) I get the white shirt for a fiver and dye them whatever colour I want (saves a fortune) just brought a load of equine patterns and about to make my jacket and a set of lycra all in ones for next to nothing!....its tight at times, but wouldn't change my little life

Don't shout at me, I am just being honest and voicing what came into my head which is 'did they include keeping ponies in that?'

why ever not , i consider my horses an essential part of living and they keep me sane , and stop me wanting to murder OH on bad days , --- i think thats pretty essential , along with the charity shop (my local retail outlet )and im thinking of asking them if they do a loyalty card , if i didnt do my shopping there their takings would be down by at least half every month !!!!!
