Give him plenty of time to have a look round and settle......and when he is in the ring keep his mate away or he may start "calling" for him/her. Maybe some rescue remedy for you to keep you calm too...... enjoy it

I'd say both of you have some Rescue Remedy...I used to give it to my gelding who was a nervous traveller and it helped. I would agree with the comment advising you to keep the friends apart, it often makes things worse having a stable mate along The most important thing is for both you and your horse to enjoy your day

Keep the two apart, my baby pony was absolutely fine on her first couple of outings, soon as she travelled with her best friend she napped like hell, called and had to come out the ring (did lots to work through this after that and next time out with her friend she tried it on but was fine in the ring). Get to the show ground in plenty of time so you can take him for a wander round to see all the sites, let him see your ring and have a nosy at anything that might be potentially 'scary.' If pony is a bit of a stress head, a shot of magnesium calmer may help, even if its just for the placebo effect on you! Enjoy ;D

Thanks again - he's normally pretty chilled & takes everything in his stride for a baby. I'm quite chilled about it as well because normally my boy is such a angel & a little gentleman. *The show has been cancelled due to the show ground being below water. I mean, c'mon, give them a pair of armbands & they'll be fine. We're doing another one instead next weekend instead of this one.* Please see my post about 'Ridden Hunter?' in the same forum if you know anything about that sort of stuff. He has now settled in to his home & is less dependent on best mate, so hopefully won't be so much of a problem.

Good luck with it, we had our boy out a couple of weeks ago, he had literally only been broken 2 weeks and had a rider on 5 times - he did a lead rein class! He had to suffer being bathed (which he hates), leaving the yard for the first time in 3 years and alone, saw traffic for the first time other than at shows as a baby as we had to walk him to the show, and then ridden in 2 classes. The ground was waterlogged and they probably should have cancelled , we did tack and turnout just to settle him and then lead rein, he came 3rd out of 4 so not last. We had a few issues in trot from both pony and jockey (losing her reins) but in general he never put a foot out of place and was an absolute star throughout. He was supposed to be at GYS but his day was cancelled (that may be a good thing!!) We had a wonderful day with him and I hope you get the same with yours when you get there next weekend.

Thanks. He has never been to a show before, never had travel boots on, never been in a trailer apart from when he came to our yard & never been 'properly' bathed. So as you can see I'm sure he'll be fine! He is such a gentleman for a baby & always chilled about anything. I've had him almost 2 weeks now & he'd been (literally) broken & left, yet he's always a angel about being ridden, groomed etc. Thanks again & I just hope he's as good as yours, DGP
