Hi,
I'm looking for recomendations of where to send my nervous horse to be broken in, he has been beaten in the past so can be nervous with new people, better with females. I've done quite a bit of ground work, lunging, leading out, he's had tack on and lunged in tack, leant over, i have sat on him and rode him but he spooked at the end and because i'd let go of the saddle my arms flew up which upset him and he set off around the arena causing him to loose balance and end up on top of me, i went back to basic groundwork but now feel he is ready to go somewhere (or them come to me) to do the next steps. We are based between Leeds / Bradford.

It sounds like you have doen a brilliant job so far, could you not get someone to come to you rather than sending him away and still be involved in the process. I would be so dubious of sending him somewhere if he is already nervous and it would be nice if you could take the credit for him too. We have just broken a pony using a novice 6 year old and a 7 yo complete beginner as jockeys who sit there and do as they are told, is it an option for you to get a jockey who can follow your instructions to the letter and finish him off yourself. If you are set on getting a trainer then you could try www.facebook.com/#!/traceymcconnell.ponies , I think she is quite well thought of and is based in Bramley area I think.

Hi,
I would love it if someone could come to me, or if he went somewhere local so i could oversea his training daily, if i'm leading him and he spooks he will run to me which is what worries me about getting on him, if he spooked he wouldn't know where to go, my next step is to get someone else to lean over him, and then sit on him whilst i'm holding him to give him the confidence he needs, i think someone on my yard knows Tracey so i will have a word, many thanks.

I have posted a message on Horse Health issues about a similar thing it is under -- Losing weight whilst away being broken -- I sent mine away and he had no trust in the first set of people at all and hey totally gave up on him and disliked him
It set him back he is now with a friend after going to a breaking yard and came back terribly terribly thin. -- only just minimally putting weight on.
I sent him to a recommended sensitive rider, but I have to say they did hit him, - they did not tell me that till much later, but I knew at the time when I went to visit my horse daft as it may sound I could sense it and if he could have talked he would have told me all.
all my other horses have been home broken and no trouble, I was experiencing similar behaviour with my horse . and he needs to be desinsitsed. - better to find a good sensitive rider who can stick on an you be with him doing all the lungeing long reining bitting etch with him - will be better in the long run I think. -- because at least you are with him every inch of the way and can monitor what is going on with him. -- having been through this -- that is my advice, -- Good luck in whatever you decide

Be very, very careful where you send him. I used to work at a stud where they have breakers in and they have a good rep, but i would not want my harse backed by them. He is sharp and had i sent him away at 3 to be done by them i would've ended up with problems. As it is, we waited till he was 5 and i did him with a trusted competant friend and he has been a dream.

I saw a demonstration by Guy Robertson and I have to say I was very impressed. I can also recommend Parklands Equestrian Centre they are based as junction 31 of the M1 Sheffield. I have heard nothing but good reports from Parklands.
