For plaits use Brylcream on each section of hair you are going to plait (not too much though or your horse will end up looking like Elvis P!). After plaiting get some old stockings/tights, cut the gusset off, and place them along and over each of the plaits and fix in place with an elastic band. This keeps the plaits smooth, shiny and clean and free of dust and bedding, etc. Steaming your hat (if velvet) over boiling water is a good way of cleaning it -brings it up a treat and lifts the velvet. Be careful not to soak it or get to close to the water.

Thanks. I've used baby oil on dark noses before, but will try on coats. DGP

Mane needs to be pulled properly, thick manes never show a neat plait although one that is longer but thin will plait OK. Short and thinned out is preferable. I use a little hair gel as I'm plaiting smoothing the hair as I go....egg white works well too and dries with a nice shine . I secure the end of the plaits with bands. I prefer to roll the plaits rather than fold them as it makes it easier to tuck stray bits in neatly. Lastly I sew the plaits in place as thread secures them much better than bands and looks much neater too. Finish off with hairspray.
