Again, not sure where to put my thread, but here goes: Does anyone have any tips to get that 'crisp' look just before go into the ring? Especially any tips about quarter marks, plaiting, hoof oil, white socks, shiny (but not slippery/sticky) coats, tack cleaning hints, & cleaning hats, jods, boots, jackets? My boy naturally glows but just want to really look his best, but at a natural stage, if you know what I mean. I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve (hint, hint; nudge, nudge) but, how to get that pristine, top class look? Alarm bells start to ring. He also has a blaze & rather pink nose. He hasn't got any sunburn (no sun to burn it is there?!?) but how can I make it nice & soft, but shiny, without having him look caked in makeup & artificial? Also, how can I really make the most out of my quarter mark templates? Someone suggested a coloured, but subtle, glitter spray over one, but shall I go for that or classic? Hope someone (anyone) can help - Ta, DGP

Don't use templates get a small comb and learn to do it free hand it only takes a little practise. Do quatermarks with the coat dampened. Warm up then get ready baby/tack wipes to clean up. Warm up in bandages leave on till as late as possible.

Thanks - I've sawed a chunk off my comb so it's the right size. Also, does anyone have any tips for bathing a fidgety, young horse (but so they still look decent afterwards)? Ta, DGP

Dappledgreypony, the milky stuff from Supreme Products is coat gloss, I think it is used along side the spray and shine product ;D ;D ;D.
I have to say the best thing I have ever used for the hooves are Absorbine Supershine, it lasts for days!

Yes thats the hoof oil we use - it has super staying power & a good gloss. We use to use the black one, when our horses legs were all the same, but now we have to use clear because all of ours have a least one white leg =) DGP

Elmere I couldn't agree more, I use supreme products but hadn't used the sparkle before. I have a grey and his mane and tail looked fab today, and truly sparkled. Do you use it on the coat as well, or just mane and tails? I put the supreme coat gloss on after bathing before his Lycra suit and it works a treat

Is the sparkle a 'silvery' stuff or can it be used on black coats?...it doesn't look like a glitter spray does it?

We have a palmino & it just makes his main & tail catch the light a little more. Thanks for all your tips (my boy wasn't impressed when I bundled him into his lycra suit, then started practising using sprays etc on him =D) and hopefully we'll do okay next weekend. DGP =)

I belive youre milky substance will be du luxe coat gloss, which I LOVE. All of the supreme products stuff is great really. Also asda's own baby shampoo is great as its so soft and gentle, but also makes the hair soo shiny and i find it great for faces! Also if you need to use chalk paste, paint it on with a hoof oil brush and bandage it with gamgee. And a touch of matt black make up, then vasaline and then baby oil on the eyes comes up a treat!

Definitely best thing to get a great looking coat is to put baby oil on after they have been bathed, while they are still wet, and then sponge down before the class and apply more baby oil, but make sure you leave enough time to dry. Pig oil can make their hair look straveller in the sun as they stick out their hair when they get hot and pig oil sticks hairs together, whereas baby oil makes each individual hair shiny.

Pig oil and baby oil is basically the same thing (mineral oil), I think the main difference is that Pig oil doesn't contain perfumes
