My horse currently has a hanging cheek which he's been ok in for quite hacking, jumping schooling etc, but the other day when I went on a hack with some friends, in some of the canters he became strong and hard to hold back, and on the last canter all the horses bolted off in gallop and my horse was so strong I couldn't stop him. I'm worried that if I ever go to a new place with open land or go XC that I will have no control of him and I won't be able to stop him, I'm wondering whether to get a stronger bit to use for certain things like XC, galloping etc just so I can hav a more control and be able to stop him. However I don't know which bit to use. He's had a pellam in before and he's had a gag but he can't have a three ring one. I hope that you can all give me some advice which would be most usefull do me

I'd stick to the hanging cheek for everyday use, but perhaps try a little Kimblewick, with the rein attached to the main ring, not through any slots for your XC. That's a form of a pelham, but only reuires one rein.

Ok thankyouu I'll look into that. I'd inly use the stronger bit for XC and stuff like that casue most of the time he's fine with the hanging cheek, just when I do more fast and furious riding I could do with a bit more control.

you could try using a grackle noseband, which will stop him opening his mouth and crossing his jaw therefore resisting the pressure, rather than changing a bit he is happy with.

My pony can be alright in a snaffle for short amounts of time when showing and for the rest of his work we use a tom thumb which has got sweet iron rollers in the middle which stops the pony grabbing the bit as they play with the rollers in the middle. This bit has worked wonders on my pony going from winning workers very rarely to winning atleast one of his workers classes every show!!
