my old girl has been deaf for 5 years now.She has learnt hand commands and as long as she is within eyesight life is fine. She no longer is walked with the rest of the pack (she detests being on a lead) as I have lost her a few times and it was stressfull for everyone.

Both my JR's went deaf as they grew older. Their eyesight also went with cataracts. I found it very worrying as they would lose sight of me in the field or around the farm and start panicking. The terrier I have at the moment tries to track me down by smell (yuk!) and I have often seen him running all over the house looking for me when in fact I am only a few feet away. Very sad, I'm afraid. As far as I know there is nothing which can be done. It's best not to let them out of your sight when you are out with them, just to be on the safe side.
