I have a novice WHP and have just taught him how to do a show gallop, over a long period of time. I started off by just loosening my reins, it doesn't really do much at this point. Then with the loosened reins add a bit of leg, this made my pony go really fast and it didn't look very nice. Keep practising that for a while then once your pony has cracked that bit, then try with a normal contact and slight leg. Once a fairly good extended canter is mastered, along the long side of where you're riding, SLOWLY ask for more empulsion and gradually loosen your reins, about 1cm and hopefully a good gallop will come out! Just remember not to lean forward with your body or hands and continually kick, I used to do it; it looks so scruffy! Gradually ask and then gradually come back. ;D

Good luck but please be careful at shows because I was once asked for a gallop in a ring when the ground was waay to bad to gallop on (it wasnt a wh class) but mine slipped on a corner at the end and it could have been dangerous, luckily I only went for extended canter. It may have lost marks but its better than an injury.

I find it's easier, especially if you have a more experienced pony, to just sit up & squeeze them on. This way they get used to extending out when you ask When you & your horse are ready, then ask for gallop & slowly build up what you want him to do. Good luck, DGP
