I have just bought a newly broken horse he goes lovely then all of a sudden he stops goes all stuffy then backs up he has never reared! Touch wood! Just wondered what I could do he lunges nicely etc it's just when he is ridden!

Just a case of being very quick to release the front end and get your leg on as quick as you can. Also carry a whip as a quick tap behind the leg will help

try circling or weaving mine does this sometimes and the more I try and make her go forwards the quicker she reverses, she usually gets fed up of this then will go forward

Check he is not getting the tongue over the bit and running backwards away from it.

Is he young and have you had his teeth checked?
Modified to add, if he's only just started ridden work he will be building up muscle in which case he will change shape and his saddle may be causing him discomfort. Worth ruling out as well.

My horse often goes backwards. Make him go backwards until he stops then walk forward, like it was all your idea. Hope this helps & good luck, DGP

Used to spin my baby soon as I sensed her coming back at me, she couldn't go backwards if she was circling! She would soon get fed up and go forward.

I am getting his teeth checked as I think it could be the problem I have a rubber cheeked snaffle in him. He reared last night so I am thinking he is in pain
