My sister has a connie who tends to lean a lot on the bit and can get quite forward going in a class. He is in a straightbar rugby pelham at the minute. Just wondering if a port mouth pelham would be better? (he hates double bridle) Any suggestions?

You might want to try something jointed to help prevent the leaning, maybe a french link?

I would use the port mouth our traditional leans on everything but you put him in a port mouth in the show ring and he is as light as a feather because they carnt lean on it.

Are you sure he is not leaning because he is unbalanced and on the forehand, finds the bit uncomfortable, or needs his teeth checking? A lot of horses and ponies appear strong because of this and people often make the mistake of putting stronger bits in their mouths which can create more problems in the long run. A ponies mouth conformation and size can influence what bit you use. If he does not like a double then he may just have a small or shallow mouth which physically cannot accomodate 2 bits. He may not like tongue pressure, or poll pressure and every bit has a different action. I would contact a bit specialist (like the bit bank) and ask advice especially before you use a ported bit. You can also try before you buy and find a bit your pony is comfortable in.

I hate single jointed bits with nutcracker action as well as your trad! A french link mouthpiece with effectively two joints is a different matter though, I've always found they go sweetly in those.

in my experience ive found that ponys do tend to lean on straight bar bits, yes. A ported or french link will be better, although if leaning has become a habit then he will need some re-schooling. like tralala said - assess the horses mouth conformation first , if he has a low palate then a ported mouthpiece will be disastrous. the bit bank are really helpful to talk to.

I've been told a lot of Connies have low palates - our dentist recommended a French link for ours X
