Please can you confirm whether this is correct - I have been told that people are not allowed to take their own photographs at NCPA shows. Two friends of mine, standing by the ringside, were approached at the last 'Festival Show' (July) by the 'Official Photographer' (Equinational) from the ring, and he announced that he would have them stopped taking photographs by the show organisers. He was very rude and quite aggressive.
I go to shows with my wife and daughter I always take photographs of her on her pony and of anything else that takes my eye, so does my mother. Like everyone else these days we budget for the show entries, the diesel, the catering etc. Buying 'Official' photographs is an 'extra' expense we can do without particularly at the prices they charge. On saying this we do buy the occasional picture, usually when we have a success at a special event or when there is a really good picture we like.
I feel shows may suffer if they disallow people to take their own pictures if they wish to do so and I do hope that NCPA encourages people to attend and take photo's as keepsakes for their albums when they attend your shows.
I certainly don't want to go to any show where I am confronted in the way these two gentlemen were it was disgraceful.

I don't think they can stop you!!!! As long as you are only photographing your child and are not selling the photo's that you take then if I were you I would just do it. Im a keen photographer and often take photo's at events of everything and everyone and have never been stopped before. Tell them to bugger off

No they can't stop you. It is soley intimidation on the photographers part. My husband works as a photographer at some shows at others he stands by the ring and just takes photos of me. However, people recognise him and come up and ask him to take some of their ponies/horses. He always refers them to the show photographers but many of these people over the last few years have become friends and you can take photos of friends.

I just simply adore boxer dogs. We had a few over the years when I was young, the best friend a kid can have. Plays footie for fun, our last one was called Jake and he was VERY special, he was a brindle and he used to jump out of the car window and run off when he went in the car.

Thanks ikklecob, for your reassuring words. My mum was so upset at D/Festival she was worried about taking her snaps after this guy had a go. It really spoiled her day and she doesn't want to go back to that show again in case it recurs.
I don't actually know if that photographer had authority from the show management for 'exclusive' rights or something similar which is why I've posted to get confirmation on this before we go back to their re-scheduled show in September. (That is presuming the same 'Official Photographers' are hired again).
It is really good to hear your point of view and your husbands' sensible approach where photography is concerned. Honestly, some of these guys, (well one in particular), think they own the show and make the rules up to suit themselves. Me, I just want a quiet life, enjoy going to shows, taking photo's is this too much to ask nowadays?

Oh - I wonder why NCPA haven't responded yet. Is it True then and they're worried about reprisals from exhibitors and spectators. Has some one let the cat out of the bag? Well, I for one will be there competing my ponies and I defy anyone to try and stop ME from taking photo's if I want to, I won't be blackmailed and threatened.

The only person that could ask you to stop taking photos is the property owner, unless you have a release you can only assume that it is allowed on the premises and they can ask you to stop or leave the premises if you do not do as they wish. Unless the photographer is staging the image and you are taking photographs of their work which rarely happens in the ring then they have no right to ask you to stop.

;D ;D ;D Oh please in all my born days I have seldom heard anything so ridiculous. Of course NCPA are not trying to ban photos. Derbyshire Festival part I was held in June so I can only assume you mean Staffs Festival which was in July but either way please feel free to take as many photos as you wish. I think a little mischief may be a foot lol ;D ;D

I always go to shows and take pictures of friends and sometimes ponies that I like, it's just for my personal portfolio and I put some on FB too. As long as you don't sell them I don't think the 'official photographer' is allowed to stop you taking photographs.

I have known a few shows where equinational have been where they have told people to stop taking photos but they have no right to do so!

Thanks everybody . . . particularly 'piper' - presume you have some authority with the content of your post. Best to get confirmation though - we don't want arguments or upset. ;D

very true Gideon. If Equinational have a problem, it will be purely to do with breaches of copywrite, which doesn't apply to your own personal photographs, they certainly wouldn't have the authority of any society to stop people taking pictures. Please pray for weather good enough to take loads of pics
