To be honest I would put a fulmer with keys first in a young horses mouth they mouth better on them and I leave them with it in till they froff up in the mouth .

personally I build things up, you do need to allow the youngster to have the bit in their mouth for a good half hour eventually as that's whats going to happen in their working life. If you only leave the bit in for 5 to 10 mins at the end it is going to be a big shock when you start to do some work. Like everything else there are no hard and fast rules, you should work to the horse or pony you are working with.
