Just wondering what saddle you recommend, for the show ring, to use on a Fell?

our fell is very wide with no wither and we had the problem of everything going up his neck, he now has a fylde samantha and a hayden for shows, both fit him beautifully and do not move, cannot recommend highly enough

Iv got a Farringtons on him at the minute but like ^^ Jack Sprat he's no wither so it constantly shifts! He's 13.2 but my current saddle has a 17" seat but I'm guessing 16" would look much better on him!

Thank you for your post. Did you have to have the saddle made to order with the carbon fibre tree? I'm wondering what my chances are of finding one 2nd hand???

I've got Native Pony Saddle Company saddles for my Fells. I did have a Samantha for one pony and it did fit well but it's a very flat saddle and not very comfortable for long hacks which I like to enjoy on my ponies. My saddles vary between 16.5" (which I need to ride comfortably) and 17".

I think once I get ride of the bulk of the WH style the actual seat size might be ok sticking with 17". Il try upload a pic of me on him & then u can all let me know what you think x

On my fells in past tried few saddles, always had a fylde Hayden, then have also tried a black country show hunter saddle which even tho was made to measure never fit right or looked right on him, then also had a fylde ray which is a fab saddle just wasn't as discreet or flatter the fell as much, but always stick with my 16 xw fylde Hayden! Love it! Never moves, and compliments our chap as you see very little saddle, however heard the littletree saddles designed or made by the woolley family who breed the little tree fells are very good too!

I'm limited in my budget as this isn't actually my pony, I just have the ride of him. So although the saddle is for him I'm limited with my budget so will need something 2nd hand rather than made to measure or new. Seems the Hayden & Samantha are popular choices x

The fyldes are fab, however just try what you like and what fits the price range, check all the sites preloved, hg etc, they do come up and usually reasonable priced, just you got to be quick as they go like gold dust!, just remembered my friend has a working hunter/show saddle from oakfield (think that's what it's called) in Lancashire who are apperently reasonable priced when new and she said the have good range of second hand and do fitting service too, hope you get sorted x

Please correct me anyone if I'm wrong, but I'm sure if you find a fylde saddle second hand as long as you know wether you want a 16 or 17 inch when you buy, I don't think it matters what width it is at the time you buy it,as if you send template or see fylde saddlery they adjust it to width Of your Pony as the trees are adjustable, they do it with a machine thing? I know my 16 in was a med or a wide and we had it made into a xw by Peter, oh and fylde keep there value when bought 2 nd hand too so always good for resale , I feel as tho I should be on commission from fylde saddlery after these posts lol

The Matthew Laurence saddle also has a adjustable tree they come out and watch you ride in it and make sure it fits .

Definately a Fylde. Its the only one that fit my Fell mare and didnt move. I would never use anything else now. Id sway more towards the Samantha though as the Haydons I find very uncomfortable as there isnt much to them. The Samanthas in my opinion are the most poular. Also the Fylde saddles always hold their money, and are easy to sell on if ever you didnt require it anymore.

Whatever you get make sure it fits - just because a certain 'make' is popular doesn't mean that it's comfortable for your pony.

I fit for Native Pony saddles and fit a lot of Fells and find they generally need our very flattest "narrow twist" tree which gives me a choice of straight cut GP/WH or two showing saddle models. Beware that sometimes showing saddle don't move because they have so little panel, and are almost attached to the horse's skeleton! I've felt a couple recently where the panels were so thin you could REALLY easily feel the points through them, which the horse can of course feel as well, and means they can be down at the back on some horses as they have no, or very a very shallow, rear gusset.
As well as a flat tree look out for fairly wide flat panels, and four girthing straps will help you with stability especially if there is any mild asymmetry.

Sbloom that is what made me go for the Mathew Laurence saddle as it looked comfortable for my pony. Some of the show saddles don't look like they offer much comfort for the horse.

It has amazed me that horses continue going at all when they can feel the points through the panel - even a really thick sheepskin pad (I only stock Mattes correction numnahs which have an extra layer of cotton in them as well) can transform the way they go, it's amazing when you put them in a more sympathetic saddle! We have two models that Andrea has designed to replace the old Mathew show hunter saddle - one aimed more at flat showing and one at workers, as there seemed to be an overlap with that model. They are both super comfy for horse and rider

The points on some of those foam filled saddles feel awful, I don't know how people can still put them on their ponies.

Maybe because some vets think that a pony that has bad damage under the rear panels has "fat pads" behind it, not noting that the muscle is firm around the outside of the panels but soft under in the "dents"....they don't see back damage in the same way that good fitters do, in so many cases.
