Went to Halifax show, did enjoy myself but there are a few things that I need to get off my chest!!
I am a bit shocked at some off the competitors! Whilst walking round my friend, on a lead rein pony, about to go in lead rein, a woman came up as we walked around, threw her lunge line at the horse and it set off galloping around the area- Right in front of us!! To say I was shocked is an understatement!! Plenty of other space but this women chooses here? No common sense!! Biting my tongue I took the girl+pony out of the way, both a bit upset by the rudeness and idiocy of this women! The public who watched the rings must have lost their hearing! The commentator, which could be heard was telling them to PLEASE get out of the horse walk! Your in a dangerous place! But did they listen? Nope! A family, laid down with 2 young kids, an older one and a baby in front of us, in the horse walk right next to a ring entrance! How stupid? When we told them (politely!!!!) That they needed to move due to the danger, they got all huffy and demanded to know why. My dad told them he'd hate to see them get stood on, which I laughed to and turned around and told them that's the least they needed to worry about, a horse can spook like that, and boom, kick to the head!! Maybe not the nicest way of putting things but they listened!!!! Also, I think letting public into the lorry park was a mistake- they don't know what certain things mean about a horse! Someone thought that a red ribbon in a horses tail was to make it look pretty, walked behind it, even after warned not to, and almost got kicked! Not their fault, but its frustrating! Some of the competitors were no better- I'd never ride near a horses bum ever!no matter whether it kicked or not, if I don't know the horse- wide birth! Some people were walking behind my friends horse, clueless, again even after we told them!! Its not as if there wasn't enough space for them to go round!
Then in the open small breeds, the riding standards were POOR. Children who had just been in lead rein and first ridden! One child kept cantering into the bum of my horse, there was only another child who had a sense of ring craft!! I had people overtaking, cutting up, when there was more than enough room to circle! Another child, lost control of her horse and almost cantered straight into me, in the lineup! Then instead of going in front of the horses she decided to try going behind them, in a gap a person would struggle! I just looked at her and she took the hint and walked in front. A kid, who must of been about 6 , went out and didn't even understand the concept of a show!! The judge had to instruct this kid around the ring! There was myself and one other girl who had open ponies and was an OPEN rider! The other 4, my god I was absolutely appalled! The kids seriously had just come out of LR+FR, and into open! I felt like I was in a riding school not at an agricultural show! On the go-round + lap of honor half these kids couldn't even canter, so in an open class the lap of honor had to be stopped!
Rant over, but seriously unimpressed by the standards of riding in some of these classes!
Think some competitors are seriously loosing their common sense and minds!!
Comments/experiences would be appreciated!
