I have a heavy feathered cob who when we purchased was infested with feather mites, I've tried a few things but a couple of days later she's stamping her feet and itching again. She's on shavings and gets turned out during the day. Is there anything you can feed them which can calm them down abit

you need to get her injected (the name slips my mind at the moment) and then it is done 3 weeks later and after that dress her feathers once a month with pig oil and sulpher it looks disgustin to start with but after a couple of days their feathers look lovely , our trads are kept in this way and we never have a problem, also dont bed on straw as the straw will harbour mites, with feathers i find its essential to do injections first to get rid of the infestation otherwise they never really seem to go, we honestly never have any trouble these days and we have masses of feathers x

Dectomax injections - you need 2, 3 weeks a part & then our vet recommends having 1 as a precautionary measure at the beginning of Autumn & another in Spring (they aren't expensive - approx £18.00 for ours).
She also recommends using Pig oil & sulphur tro keep them at bay - never tried it but will this year as this is the first time ours has had mites.

dancer, the pig oil and sulpher works a treat and we have never had to had the injections again, however it must must must be done on a montly basis, i got a bit complacent once and let it slip adn the mites came back so now i never miss a monthly go over but really work it into the feathers well and just watch the ground where you done it as it can become slippery!

Thanks Boomerang, I will give it a go - do you have to massage it into the skin or just coat the feathers?

Frontline spray as long as there are no scabs and/or broken skin. Rub well in and do this every 10 days for three treatments. Then go onto pig oil and sulphur - do a patch test. I do ours every three weeks. If you want a huge long note about keeping hairy horses legs in great condition, send me a PM with an email address and I will send it to you.
I get all my heavy horse supplies from Matt Burkes and normally meet him at a show and pick up from him in bulk to keep the cost down.

My little cob had mites, they were picked up on the vet check and after two and a half years I think I've cracked it ☺️ We get the dectamax injection she is 14.2hh and weights about 535 kg so she has 8ml. I totally clip her as she was driven daft with the itching ( being an ezma sufferer I feel her pain ) she has two injections two wks apart as the first one only kills the living little critters so the second kills their eggs . I have to take her bed of shavings up throw them zo flora her stable then repeat before we come bk from her second one phew!!! I then hibiscrub every wk drying her legs thoroughly then sponge pig oil x sulphur on then put sudacreme on any sore skin which after trying everything on the market have found cheap and effective. It's a total pain but she's worth it and itch free, hope that helps ?

I am just about to take on a shire colt 10 mths old I have been told by his current owners that he has mites, she was messing with his mane trying to show me from this I am assumming she means feather, this is the first heavy horse I have owned always owned throughbreds never had a prob with mites, shall I go ahead with the purchase how easy are mites to get rid of, I mean I'm not opposed to removing his feathers to treat him, some please advise.

Have a look at this thread in the snug area, bought new baby who came with mites. One treatment as for our other boys and clear already. Feathers still on. Benzoyl peroxide shampoo and sulphurated lime dip. Also leaves feathers blindingly white. Good luck with your new one ?

Can understand that how difficult it is to calm such an affected cob. My farm animals were also disturbed by these mites. Then I started surfing over internet and found useful tips on how to treat bed bug bites quickly. All the info was very helpful.

If she thought they were in the mane she could mean lice? These are easily seen as they get quite big.
