Our little wire hair daxie has had puppies which were planned and we are over the moon! However she had to hav a c-section as the puppies didn't engage even though she was in labour for 24 hrs!
Puppies arrived safe and we have 3 health pups! However now we have a problem as her nipples have gone inverted and puppies can't latch on! Any body got and tricks! We are feeding them by hand! They are not quiet 24 hours old yet. mummy loves them, sit and cuddles them and will let hem feed but they just can't latch on! Any help would be fab, vets being v useless!!
Argh! My poor mum is in pieces! We just want to keep them healthy and safe! Thank in advance!

phone your local RSPCA and ask if their vets can help, usually I think that organisation is fairly useless but worth a phone call, also try the kennel club and see if anyone there has a trick or maybe they have a forum where you can get help

Try some of the big rescues (Many Tears Rescue / Hope rescue are pretty good) and ask for their advice - they will also be able to help on hand rearling pups - good luck

Yep, kennel club put us in touch with a feed company they have sent colatrum and advices use on what to do and how much milk they need.
we doing ok they are fed every two hours in the day put on mummy dog first for a suck off her only one nipple that they can all suck on, then fed by hand started to gain a little weight after losing a little.
Our vets have been so negative and said we may lose them all as in her words" we cant keep this up for long as we may get tired"! What do new parents do with babies! I'm a maternity nurse and look after other peoples babies and felt like say "oh yes when the babies is Hungary I say sorry baby I'm tired no feed!
The women is bonkers! My poor mum is in pieces. She has had about 4 hours sleep everyday to keep these puppies alive and they are trying so hard! We know it's touch and go with any litter of pups weather mummy dog feeding or not but a little positive thinking would be great!
This practice use to be so good but has got so big it's lost it's friendly positive attitude to people that love are and devote their lives to having happy healthy pet! Thanks for advice what a pickle. We were so excited about he puppies and now it's all hand on deck!!! I'm leaving my new born charge tonight to go do night shift with the puppies! One to add to the cv!

You are leaving them with her all the time arent you, they will manage eventually to feed but puttin them on one nipple may lead to her getting mastitis. I would put them with her all the time , and yes keep feeding them if you think they arent full enough, but the nipples will soon sort themselves out and you will soon have a litter of fat little beatles- good luck.

Yes they are with her all the time the puppies can't latch on anyother nipples. Other then this one, we try all though every feed by helping them but they just can't latch on. she is on antibiotics for her c section so at the moment the mastitis should be ok so says the vet as we were worried too. We were just topping them up for a few day but they lost to much weight to quickly. so we have had to feed them more. Thanks for advice :-)

Try gently drawing milk of her. Get a very warm cloth and place it over her teats and area. I knw it soounds not quite right but just keep tweaking them and releasing the milk. You will encourage hr to drop her milk and the fullness and hardness will go. Don,t give up. You must also keep latching the pups on. Gently open there mouths with your finger at the side and gently push the puppies mouth around the whole teat area, keep te puppy pushed on. Pm if you want. If you li ved nearby i would come and show you. Loved it when my dog had puppies.

Thanks for all your help guys! I just done the 12 till four shift and at 330 the little dog puppy manage to latch on to a nipple that was inverted and It popped out now! Hooray!
He fed on it for about 20 mins and then big boy and danity Dora came shuffling along and latched on to!
They all just had a top feed rather then a feed from me as she still hasn't got that much milk as we are now on day 6 supply has been down but hopefully need for supply is increasing and she will increase her milk! So happy I was dancing around the front room! We will show that vet! My mum has had a few litter of labs before but these little daxies even though there small are really little wrigglers! Here a little pic if the moment all three latched on for the first time! Yay!!! :-)

Well Done Mowtown!
Just another suggestion. Have you got a piece of oldish vet bedding, clean. The pups will be able to grip this with there back legs and not slide down. Keep putting the warmish towel on her to ease the disomfort of the sore teat area.
Yikes, feeling broody giving these tips, ..................now where is that dog of mine ;D

Hahaha, I'm using all my tricks I show my new human mums to Breast feed but it's working! Did the warm towel trick and really has helped! Thank you!! I don't no why i didn't think of it as i do it with mummies but sometimes you just forget to try these things on your animals for fear people will lol! Im so so happy they have gained weight again and hopefully will be back to birth weight tomorrow which is not great but it can only better.
Today they have just had top up feeds and are trying sooo hard to latch on them self and with only a little help they are happily trying there hearts out and for atleast half hour and then mum and me Are giving a little top up hooray!

We doing well they have put on an average of 30 gm on each over the the last few days.
Two are now a few gm bigger then birth weight so we are heading in the right direction.
They can latch on the three nipples well now on there own but our mummy dog just hasn't got the milk! She is been fed Milk making recipes but i think it was just a little to late to kick after the pups not being able to before. They suck her for 30 mins and just don't get full at all so we are still feeding every 2 half hours but if that's what we have to do that's what we have to do!
We are all soooo tried but its so worth it they are so cute and so very different already. I still can't beileve the vets attitude. Anyways onward and upwards! Thanks everyone x

Our happy story has taken a turn for the worst.mummy dog had to go on more antibiotics for her c-section wound and it is upset the puppies tummies and won't eat so back to hand feeding! They have had an probiotic and hopefully this will help poor little things! Everybody keep fingers and toes crossed. Hopefully they will be strong enough to get though this! :-(

Motown, the pups will adjust to the antibiotics. It is quite common to give bit*hes these drugs to help them heal and clean up.

Well after a very worrying weekend and pups losing a little weight, we are back on track! We took mummy dog to new vet on saturday as her wound was so bad it was losing infecting everywhere.
The new very straight away said that mummy dog was allergic to the internal stitches and they were trying to get out. He managed to cut lose on from her wound and even though she had a small hole, it's the best thing that he did. She has nearly completely healed she has so much milk in the last 24 hrs and everything is now how it should! We are not feeding them and she is now Completely in love with them! The longest two weeks ever but I think we have done it! The most traumatic litter we have ever had!
We spoke to new vet about the other one and he is at the same practice and has advices us to speak to head vet as he feel we haven't had support or the right info. We don't want a well done,we just needed to have the support to help the pups as much as poss! Thanks for everybody's help! The little girl pup has opened her eyes today so cute!

Good to hear thinks are looking more positive, poor Mum has had such a hard time.
I would love a Daxie, both our Yorkies died this year at the grand old ages of 15 and 17 and the house is just too quiet. I had been thinking for a while about getting something else and a Daxie was on my list. We also own three Collies but they are all working dogs. I just need something to cosy up with watching TV and to come with me in the car to do the ponies.

I know that chocolate is not normally good for dogs, however I used to give mt broodmares sweet mix which smelt of chocolate.. it increased the milk yield dramatically, my vet said it always helps so try sprinkling some high grade cocoa powder on her food or a little grated chocolate.

I just thought I'd pop a little update on! So after seeing a new vet everything came good! Mummy dog had a reaction to the invisible stitches, and this is why she had the infection and no milk! Vet managed to remove a little of the stitch out and even though it left a big hole with in 24 hours it had healed it self as in affect the stitch was a foreign body!
So milk came in and finally no more hand feeding!
They are now three weeks old eyes open and crawling around and eatting soggy puppy food! Thanks for all your help! Thank goodness we didn't give up! We wont be using that vet again and we have had a chat with head vet and hes v shock and upset with How she Dealt With Us!!!
Here's a little photo of them eating their first meal!
