So my 3yrs PBW is now bitted, trimmed, will load quietly and stand in the trailer and has even been to a couple of shows but our latest thing is not standing still. Either in or out of the ring she just tries to spin around me. She will stand lovely at home!!! Any suggestions?

Practice makes perfect! My boy used to do this as a 2 year old - spinning and standing on his back legs was his party trick! I used to distract him with treats like polos or let him chew the top of my whip to keep him quiet in the line up or in front of the judge which worked for me, and it was a case of being very firm and clear of what I expected when he started to mess about... Now he is a dope on a rope

Just show your horse u won't take any messing please don't use treats as a distraction otherwise ur going to geyt anipper I would try lunging then if they don't stand still after that make them turn circles or even a tap on the shoulder with the crop she's just trying her luck !

Any suggestions for a ridden who won't stand? She was given polos but now if you give her treats to keep her quiet its one evey 10 seconds or she gets narked and is even worse + they get nippy took her to NPS and wouldn't stand for judge or for rider to get on, but perfect for conf?

By treating them to stand still you are actually rewarding the fidgeting and teaching them to carry on doing it! Think rewarding by voice when you get the desired behaviour and you will teach better habits.

I would do lots of long reining using voice commands if your not already, teaching them to stand is an essential part of the breaking process and should be taught from day one so if a ridden horse has got into a bad habit of fidgeting I would go back to basics. Obviously theres a difference between a horse not standing from being bad mannered and one that is stressed, the later will just take time and experience.

I have to say after having a few (young) ponies that do not stand still at shows that mostly it comes down to milage and practice. As a four and five year old my pony was a nightmare and I was embarrased to stand in line up, to go out to the judge and to stand in final line ups when he would not stand still through the whole class. i tried giving him mints before going to the judge etc but nothing worked however this year as a six year old something has just clicked and he stands like a rock

Thanks for all your suggestions. More shows I guess is the way to go as she is great at home so I cannot practice there x
