Big Mama, I probably didn't fully explain my point which probably supports your very valid suggestion of a limit on qualifiers. If you want a true reflection of consistency, you have to compare against a similar number of attempts in order to create a true average. But my point still stands that if you qualify first time out (100 percent hit rate) its hard to do better than that. I like the suggestion of a max but at the same time dislike the suggestion of a dictate about what you can do with your pony. So, if this was something like your best four results will count on the league, that would work all round. Fair for those that can't afford or don't want to trail around everywhere, fair for those that keep getting good results, etc. However, I am not sure the qualification system is broken anyway.

We are in the position of being 3rd and probably the only one that hasnt qualified in the list!!! This can happen if you have a particularly strong section and for us in the workers you have to have it all right on the day!!! We would love a wild card qualification as the firt 2 already qualified!!!
However a cautionary tale. A few years ago a friend was in the 15h section. It was very strong and because she struggled to get past them all to get qualified. She did it on a 5th at the last show of the season. Went to HOYS and beat them all!!!! Ended up highlyplaced and highly delighted!!!
I think a points system where you could choose your best 5 results from qualifiers would be the fairest way forward. That way people arent chasing qualifiers and welfare of ponies travelling up & down the country isnt compromised!!!

Tbh I only do the qualifiers that are within a 2hr radius of home.....I dont do chasing!! You are very fortunate to live in an area with a few within 2 hours then. If I stuck to a 2 hr radius, then I would only have 1 to compete at....as it is, I usually have 2 opportunities within 3 hrs and that's what I usually stick to. I guess qualifying for HOYS will remain a pipedream for me if they introduce a points scheme for qualifying.

I think it's a great thing especially for people that have been getting placed consistently all season, it recognises that they too have achieved a great consistent season. I didn't know about it but my horse won an award and for all the hard work everyone puts in all season it's an added little bonus for everyone. I think people should back the new scheme rather than be so quick to moan about it!!

Whilst I agree about ponies being over shown, my concern is for the young jockeys who will be riding ponies across the country at many of the shows that operate on a Mon-Fri. If qualification is going to be based on points scoring there will be lots more days off school.

Deejay and Lowerstone, well done on your awards. These seem to me to be completely different, awards based on breeding of those qualified. That seems sensible!

Thanks catkin. These awards are calculated on the same points system. The six ponies by him all competed in the qualifiers and all of them qualified so the points they accumulated over the season were added up. They do not give a list of the winners so I don't know how many points he had altogether. The winners will be announced at HOYS on the Thursday and then the overall winning sire of the show will be announced and will collect the overall award in the main arena.
We received a lovely trophy and two gold ringside seats for Thursday.
