So, HOYS has now put up the current standings for their new points awards ... some of the top five in each of the categories are yet to qualify for HOYS - and some of the top horses have clearly only been to one show, qualified, and not been out again! Apologies if this has already been posted, but I could not see it anywhere! www.hoys.co.uk/news/hoys-awards-series/

So the top points awards may go to ponies which have not qualified for HOYS

Deejay, I believe so - there have been some ponies who have been extremely consistent but not lucky enough to get their ticket!

I should of read it properly before posting, points are awarded 5 for winning a qualifer down to 1 for 5th What a great idea, didnt know anything about this. Would it be an idea for the future for a wild card where by the highest placed most consistent unqualified horse / pony gained a ticket. ?

Liberty that is quite a good idea. The only thing is it may cause people to over show and travel all over the place in order to qualify.

Basically I don't think it's anything to be proud of cause most of the horse in top place are those how can't qualify for HOYS !

Titch - those are my thoughts exactly - I don't see a problem with a wildcard - they used to do the wildcard Olympia qualifier at NPS champs.
Easyned - I disagree - most of the winners will have qualified for HOYS with the exception of a few who have had an unlucky run of seconds/top 4 placings - I could name a few and most have qualified for HOYS previously, but have just been unlucky this season!

I hate any of these schemes which encourage people to chase up and down the country and enter as many qualifiers as possible - more coffers for Grandstand Media but more wear and tear on the limbs of too many horses. I would be much more in favour if the number of qualifiers that can be included was restricted but I can't see that happening.

I think that we will finish in the top 3 in our section. Having only contested 5 qualifiers we can hardly be accused of chasing up and down the country.

I'm not accusing any individuals of chasing up and down the country - but in principle it will encourage those who think it is okay. I would have no problem if 5 or 6 qualifiers could be counted towards the scheme, but someone who does loads could be 5th or 6th each time and do well out of this while their pony suffers in silence.

I totally agree Guestless, I had no idea about the scheme until Saturday and we only started doing the qualifiers with our pony after the Lincoln qualifier as we had already entered the first few with our other pony.

We did not know about this award either until this week- it is an extra bonus! We were lucky enough to compete in three and win three so for us it is fabulous! A big thank you to the sponsors and HOYS ;D

I personally have only just read about this, this week and standing in 2nd in the coloured plaited ponies I am one of them riders who has had a pony so consistent this year having 4 seconds and 3 3rds and it's nice to be awarded with the efforts that goes Into trying to qualify for HOYS and the pony I ride has not been dragged up and down the country either we just seem to be unlucky on the golden ticket front!

I've done 5 qualifiers with Boyzie (I think)...two 2nds and two 1sts out of them and I'm 3rd in my section.

Do the awards points need to be updates? My friend is currently in 5th with 8 points but hes had a 5th, 3rd, two 2nd's and a 1st in his hoys classes this year so surely he should have 17 points?

I had a look on the HOYS site and it said up to August I think, so more points to be added.
This seems to be another way of HOYS extracting even more money from competitors.

I have to say, the incentive of a rug, gloves and a jacket would not encourage me to go chasing more qualifiers! Tbh I only do the qualifiers that are within a 2hr radius of home.....I dont do chasing!!

Easyned made me laugh. If people want to qualify there going to go to the shows anyway. I know lots of competitors myself included who won the most consistent for there section who have qualified!

My comments are not aimed at any pony in particular and well done to those who have done well. However, my thoughts:
* how can you say they are most 'consistent'? If a pony goes out once, qualifies first time, surely thats consistent in its own way? If a pony goes out twice misses once and does it a second time, surely thats consistent too? * why reward ponies that have missed that spot repeatedly and then kept going until they did qualify? It doesn't make them better or more consistent than those above. * if you are lucky enough to qualify early, why would you trail up and down the country at vast expense, wear and tear on animals etc, when you don't need to? * maybe you would run the animal in classes already entered, or close by, or shows that you like, but I don't think many people would pay again and again for the fun of it * encouraging this behaviour gains more levy fees for HOYS * showing isn't always about consistent, but about winning on the day. Maybe an animal is everybody's 'almost' but nobody's 'star'. * one wildcard might be OK to be awarded this way, but please let's relabel the 'competition'? * is it OK to publish these lists (and therefore give publicity) just before HOYS?
Sorry, I don't mean to be at all negative to those people who've done well to be listed, but I am most uneasy about this initiative.

catkin ... here is the definition of: consistent (adjective): (of a person, behavior, or process) Unchanging in achievement or effect over a period of time a win at one show is not consistency Re. Hoys Points Awards ..... i have heard whispers that this system is going to be used by Hoys for 2013 qualifiers ... if they do then they must surely limit each pony to a maximum of six qualifiers per season

Not a scheme I am enamoured of. I see a problem with people chasing qualifiers.

Not a scheme I am enamoured of. I see a problem with people chasing qualifiers. Many people chase qualifiers up and down the country already ... think it could work if the number of qualifiers each pony/horse can do is limited to six and anyone who exceeds this limit with their animal disqualified for the year
