How do you ungreen? My 5 yr old sold to me as suitable novice ridden is proving the complete opposite! Away to be professionally re-backed, is strong, silly, opinionated, and not suitable for me to ride! Will this come with time? Or am I living in cloud cuckoo land???

Sometimes after being broken at 4 and going sweetly they can hit 5 and become a bit more knowing. I would expect a 5 year old to be green, i have one broken at 4 turned away and now he is back in work. When you say a suitable novice ridden do you mean for a novice or novice classes?
Why was he re backed?
Time is key, as is work, patience and getting him out and about learning about life.

Our Sammy Shetland was backed in the summer of his 4th year then turned away for winter. During his 5th year he was a lovely FR pony for my then 6yo daughter, very much a novice, but sweet and willing to please. Last year as a 6yo the Kevins set in. He was still ok at home, but pretty much impossible to ride away from home. We tried a couple of shows and after Cerys had several falls (fortunately never hurting herself coming off a 39" pony onto thick grass!) we stopped taking him out. We've not been out much this year, but have taken Sam out, on hacks, to some SJ and to one show, and he hasn't put a hoof wrong.
Nothing changed dramatically in his management, feed, routine, schooling from when he was 5 to when he was 7. He just grew up, into a super little pony.
So yes, they can be little angels as babies, then go through a nightmare Kevin stage. Like teenagers you just have to hope and pray that they come through it quickly and turn back into the lovely personalities they were before!!!

Your horse will always be green if you are, he needs to be educated and you need to decide if you are up to the job. If you are not you need to get an instructor in to school you both or the pair will be ruined.
