hi everyone, a friend has a 17.2hh warmblood and is currently looking for a 3.5 tonne lorry to be built. She has been advised that staffordshire horseboxes do a nice one, but we have never heard of them and have not seen any our way (being down in Kent).
Could any of you recommend them or otherwise?
or any suggestions of other makes of 3.5 tonnes to carry a big horse would be good - my friend wants a new build or very very recent.
waiting in anticipation.....

How much does a 17.2hh warmblood weigh? and will he be happy with his head pressed against the ceiling? I dont think it matters which company makes the box, in my opinion a 3.5 ton box is not safe - and probably not legal by the time you have got all your stuff in ( the horse would probably weigh a ton on his own). Just my opinion - but I do live near to the M40/M42 and constantly hear of accidents with big horses in these small boxes on the motorway.

apparently the ceiling height of the boxes are 8' - that must be as high as a normal lorry ceiling - these boxes are supposed to have a high payload too (although i would think she should only take one at a time).
We have lots of affiliated dressage down this way at equestrian centres down very narrow little lanes and the big boxes are a nuisance getting to and from. My friend already has a 7.5 tonne, but is going to replace it soon, as she lives up an extremely narrow lane at the top of a hill and it is very difficult manoeuvering there.

A 17.2hh horse is 70 inches at the wither (5ft10in) - will he get his head and neck into 26 inches? I dont know as I only have smaller ponies but a 11.2hh pony standing in his normal position has the top of his head is around 14 inches above his wither - so one would presume that at 17.2 horse would have the top of his head at least 22 or 24 inches above his wither - and as I said before very close even to an 8ft high ceiling. If he threw his head up for any reason he would almost certainly hit the ceiling - and who knows what might happen then?

i personally find the 3.5 tonne lorries are only really suitable for ponies and small horses ,i travelled my 15.2hh Irish sports horse in one and just not enough power. Just my opinion. I no Jane and she also builds bigger lorries all her lorries are excellent and she will make what you want Can PM number if required

I think Dollar and becki very sensible. I have sold far too many horsboxes to count over the years and there is just no way I would put a 17.2hh warmblood in a 3.5 ton lorry - no matter who made it!!

look at these 2 websites www.galloperhorseboxes.com I like the 5 tonne and very good prices, this one. www.georgesmithhorseboxes.comI found a small horseboxes are a lot more expensive, not surprised about a lot of accident because while I was driving my horsebox on motoraway at 60 mph and they drove pass me like whizz, TUT TUT.

Try Missina Horseboxes. (www.missina.com) They build lovely small lorrys but the other half of the company is working with large fleet lorries so know what they are taking about with weights and safety.

I personally wouldnt put anything over 15 hands into a 3.5t horse box, not only due to the height of the horse but the weight, I would be very suprised if any 3.5 box has the payload to accomodate a horse of that size along with passengers, petrol, tack etc

Thank you everyone - my friend has looked at the Messina boxes (as they advertise in the Dressage magazine a lot) and they do look really good with lots of safety features but they are in Devon which is a very long way away and they charge VAT. She has been told that the Staffordshire boxes do not have VAT.
Will get her to check out the ones mentioned by Wiltshire Man as have not heard of these and I am very surprised that anyone would drive a horse over 60mph
MUST GO, SOMEONE HAS JUST SPOTTED A RED SQUIRREL IN OUR GARDEN!!!

Just wondering how a horsebox company could NOT be VAT registered? Surely just a couple (one in some cases) of sales would take them over the VAT threshhold

highill - they could just have included VAT in the price overall instead of quoteing a pirce + VAT.

mmm maybe - but then the price would/should say including VAt - because if you are VAT registered you would need to know this as you could then claim it back.

we have a 3.5 ton lorry and personally i dont think that a 17.2hh would fit in it comfortably , yes , you may get them in but i dont think it would safe , i reckon 15.5hh is a realistic and safe maximum size for that size of lorry

Courcheval Horseboxes are in Dartford and will build to your custom. I must admit though not sure if they would recommend putting a 17.2 in a 3.5 horsebox.

I have known and dealt with Staffordshire Horseboxes for over 10 years and have found their service second to none! I have never had any problems with my lorry even when it was pulled over for load testing at Hickstead with my 17hh dressage horse on board!
Every care and attention was given to my requirements and my box is fab!
Some one appears to have an axe to grind which does not relate to an actual horse box manufactured by this Company !
For the record I do not have any relation to this Company other than that of a customer !!!!
