Looking for some advice from people who may be able to help regarding the issues I'm having with my native's mouth. When ridden the inside of his mouth bleeds slightly and the outside of his mouth rubs. He has some slight scarring where the bit sits on the outside of his mouth from before I bought him, but causes no discomfort when ridden as he is still light in my hand. No amount of bit wrap, different bits or bit rings have solved this problem. His teeth have been checked by the dentist and have been given the ok. He does open his mouth when ridden by this is easily solved by a flash noseband. Suggestions please?

have you tried different mouthpiece materials, also have you looked at different shapes of mouthpiece to vary the pressure points within his mouth?

How about trying to go bitless for a while in order to give his mouth time to heal.

Poor boy. Natives are renowned for having fleshy lips and tongues. He's obviously suffering discomfort as the lips are bleeding. Happy mouth bits, are renowned for causing chaffing so avoid them. My first stop would be to have a dentist in, to make sure he's not suffering with any sharp edges -which you've already done. Next I'd give him some time off, or ride in a hackamore for a couple of weeks to allow his mouth to heal. Then once I was sure, he was fine without a bit in his mouth I'd find a bit with nice thin, mouthpiece that was high quality. I'd probably go for a full cheek snaffle to prevent any movement of the rings - I'd go for a metal mouthpiece. It's importat to make sure the bit actually fits correctly and is being placed at the correct height in the mouth. There should be a couple of small wrinkles in the corner of his mouth, as I'm sure you're aware, but he should not be smiling. I have a friend, who's horses lips split occasionally and she swears by putting Bit Butter on the corners of his mouth before and after riding - I don't whether it works, never used it, but it might be worth a try. It states it improves salivation, and promotes healing... www.equestriansuppliesshop.co.uk/products/Bit-Butter.html

I have exactly the same problem with a little coloured cob I have recently got and have tried various bits inc french link snaffle, hanging cheek snaffle, myler comfort snaffle, bit guards and finally neue schule tranz angled eggbutt snaffle and it doesnt rub and her mouth isnt cut and shes happy in it so far (have got it on a months trial) and seems very relaxed in it!

Sounds strange but does he (cant think for the word so going to use foam) foam, at the mouth? My lad doesnt and the same thing happened to him, he went in a hackamore for a little while until the cut heals as i dont want him in any discomfort, but i now use a neue schule and they are fab! I agree with Rumble, deffinetly worth the ring!
