dark bay, black points on the ears are usually a good indicator of black base (/dun, bay) as opposed to Red (Chestnut) base. Yours looks to have brown in the coat - on head and foal coat looks bay too. Very nice foal btw - breeding? Im guessing sec C or D

Bay. Entirely possible from parents' colours as the dam could well carry agouti even if the sire can't.

I thought bay, but wondering whether the legs would then be darker above the white socks? My liver chestnut lad was this colour as a baby

what colour was he born, any day old pictures? If he was born a Silver/Blue/Grey colour then he is black, if he was born a brown colour he will be brown/bay and if he was born chestnut he will be liver chestnut. A horse is always the colour they are born on day 1. My friend had a bright chestnut foal born, it was a very red/orange chestnut, by the time it was fully grown you would swear it was black, but being born chestnut it had the Red gene so was a dark liver chestnut.

nici - I think he hasn't yet shed out the foal leg hair in the first photo, the only one showing the legs. I would put money on them coming through black underneath!
There is one "pooh trap" in what you say illeybrook - silver bays, who can look to be born chestnut but the darker points come through later on. Otherwise I'm with you in general - although I have always described the birth colour of blacks as mushroom! And as long as no grey genes are involved, that's a completely different ball game!

There is a small charge for changing the colour. Or not bother, there are many with the incorrect colour on their passports.
That's a bay if ever I saw one.

My Sec D was this colour when I chose him,,, Dam was black, Sire Liver chestnut. We thought he looked like a Hyena! Anyway breeder said he would be Black. When we got there to pick him up 2 months later they had the most beautiful liver chest in the paddock doing some leading practise, I said he's beautiful and they said good cos he's yours!! Now he is 8yrs and Black but just sometimes you look and think liver. hope that helps

Whatever his colour he's lovely. You may have to wait a while before you find his true colour. Our sec D boy went through several colour changes. Born bucksin...... Toyed with being liver chestnut from 6 months onwards..... Before finally settling at 2 years old as black!! You could always send a sample of mane to be tested, that way you'd get his true colour in a matter of days

Well mum had him DNA tested! the resuts are that he carries the black and red gene so he will either be black or liver chestnut!
