My truthful opinion is to have some lessons with your horse but don't over do it as your horse only young get your confidence up and get out hacking get your horse going forward before thinking about anything else the key is to get them going forward it is hard a green rider with a green horse so the lessons will come into place and also when your horse throws its head up half halt then ask again instead of throwing loads of unnecessary tack on.

Not sure if "google" comment aimed at me! Bit mystified as rarely post and not been on here for a week! I only post if I am reasonably certain that it is a competant adult asking advice because they are stuck with something not dealt with before!

Was aimed at someone who uses google to find information instead of actually having the knowledge and experience themselves. I think anyway

it sounds like just an unbalanced baby thing. after all the checks on back/tack/teeth etc i would either ride her daily but keep the sessions short and vary it as much as poss. Or i would turn her away untill you can commit to ride more than once a week. i would also recommend the help of a good instructor.

Again, thanks for your replies! I had a lesson today on her with a dressage rider who said she has a lot of potential but is a stubborn mare who will try to get away with doing what she wants until she realises it is easier and more confortable to give in and listen. I came off with a massive smile as it is the best I have felt on her since she came back, it is amazing the difference having someone there to talk you thrrough stuff makes! She still put her head up but did drop it and go nicely for a few strides every now and then (which I praised her for) proving that she can and will do it - I'm going to turn her away from all ridden work until early next year then make sure I get my act together when I bring her back into work.
Would you recommend lunging over the winter a couple of times a week or should I just leave her be until I bring her back into full work?
Thanks!!

Now then soph, turn her away totally, she will not forget what she has learned and consistency is key with youngsters when you bring them Back into work. You won't be there to do it anyway!! You'll be At uni! She is only just four and a big baby at that. Leave her til spring, get some lessons with her then and start afresh. You need to boost your nerves, your riding is very good once you gain your confidence with her. Lecture over, auntie karen xx

Bungee reins (think thats what its called - John Whittikar does a version) are good! They encourage the horse into a natural outline with out forcing them x

Glad you had a good lesson - I love mine! I agree with Karen's sentiment regarding turning her away.

Thanks Gina. She is a beautiful horse but a late 4 year old, by rights should have made 14.2 (both parents were) but ended up nearer 16hands so is immature and in my opinion needs leaving over winter. Soph is a lovely rider, has a position many people would kill for, natural and elegant and good hands just lacks some confidence which Soph has said already. They will be a lovely pair when they get going:) Yes, I'm biased but if it wasn't true I wouldn't say it.
There you go Soph, praise from your grumpy auntie ;D

Gooogle you are ok, the snipey remark was a rather weak attempt to ridicule me ;D
Google is a great source of information, together with lessons, books, clinics, demos, video, etc etc. Those of us who want to be successful, ride and care for our horses well and do the very best we can have information at our finger tip, marvellous, of course not everyone does the same with regard to standards. Personally I don't think you ever stop learning and I will google on.

If i want to find out about something, it's great to google it! Only the same as looking it up in a book so i don't see why a comment like that would be made??
