Hi
In the last couple of days my 9 month old miniature pinscher has started to eat her poo and I don't know why. She is on royal canin food.
Does anyone know why she could be doing this ?

I had a look at this on the internet the other day as my puppy had been eating her poo but shes only 10 wks old. A few of the things it said was
1. They are hungry 2. They are bored 3. If they have done itvin the house they might be trying to clean it up before they get told off 4. They have a shortage of minerals in their diet
So it depends where she is poo'ing then eating it?? I did ask my vet and she said she will grow out of it but I'd try and pick it up as soon as she's been and speak to your vet next time you go or sooner if she keeps doing it :-)

Well I'm finding it hard with her house training. She goes outside and does wee and poo outside, I make a fuss of her and she knows shes been good. But then she does still do it in her cage. And this is where she is eating her poo. And it is more smelly than usual.

You could not be feeding her any bbetter food, so stick with that. 1. what else are you feeding her, ie, meat, milk 2. Try and feed her about 4oclock her last meal of the day. Restrict her water.(tin hat ready) after 6.oclock. 3. make sure yo give her access to water first thing 4. She sounds like she is trying her damdest to stay clean. Just try what i have sais. let me know how you go on. 4. keep praiasng her when she goes outside. Good luck.

She only has her food and a dentastick now and again. But she tends to pick up anything and everything she can find. Which is nit ideal at all. When she goes outside I could stand out there with her for 30 minutes and all she does is sniff and look for things to eat. And doesn't wee or poo. But goes in her cage and does it. Or other times she will go straight out and wee and poo like first thing in a morning she has her breakfast and goes straight out and has a poo, but not wee as she has already wee'ed just before I have come downstairs to let her out of cage. I just don't get it, my boxer dog was so easy compared to my little min pin.

'Pineapple is just one of many measures you can take to deter your dog from eating poop, but every dog is different. Believe it or not, this is a normal behavior for dogs that is just really disgusting to us. There are different reasons a dog might eat poop (Coprophagia is the clinical term) and it is important to find out why they are eating it before you can find a solution. A lot of dogs will eat poop because they are bored – it will become a toy, another source of play. Some dogs that might have come from pet stores or puppy mills may especially see it as a toy because their earlier environment was so barren. Depending on where your dogs come from, this could be a possibility. Sometimes it is a learned behavior they've picked up from other dogs. If they’ve been punished for going in the house, they might eat it to remove the evidence. It’s also a good way to get attention. Ask yourself if your dog is being stimulated enough mentally and physically to occupy it during the day? These are all reasons why a dog might be eating poop, but most of the time, it’s really simply because dogs like the taste of it and it becomes a real habit'. This ^ is taken from Victoria Stilwell's advice page. I had heard that pineapple is supposed to put dogs off eating poo. I've had several dogs that have done it and it does become a bit of a game for them to try to get to it before you can clean it up I think it is possible too that they see their mums doing it when cleaning up after them as babies and copy them. My youngest dog who is now 4yrs old did it from the time we got him, he didn't do it every day, but I used to sometimes feed turkey and sometimes the lamb flavour of the same brand of kibble and he was definitely more attracted to the lamb flavour. I must say since I started raw feeding (a few months ago) it hasn't happened once, I think it's because the 'waste' contains much less undigested matter and is smaller, harder and generally less smelly and therefore much less attractive to the dog. I do think b*tches are harder to house train than dogs and small breeds even more so (IMO), obviously the sooner you can get her clean indoors the easier it will be to cope with this behavior.

I have found her very hard to house train compared to my bouncy boxer lol I will try the things everyone has suggested and see how she goes. It's just awful because she loves to lick all the time which we do tell her no but now it's even worse with smelly poop breath :-)
Thank you for all your advice

My brother has the same problem their dog was actually quite well house trained as a puppy then for no reason started weeing and pooing every night in her cage which she doesn't eat but stinks. She can be let out and do nothing (no matter how long) he waits, he doesn't watch her because then she won't go at all then waits to do it in the house, she does sometimes do a wee ect outside but then comes in and does it again within 1/2hr. If their other dog goes out at the same time this one is eating the poo while the other dog poo's that is why they are mostly let out seperate now Another problem is she has started to bark constantly even through the night (the other one doesn't make a noise)they are together in the house he did have an anti bark collar on and it worked for awhile but she just seems to be getting worse. Any advice welcome and I'll pass it on
