have had dogs most of my life [j r terriers] i have three at the moment 2 look really well ,i have to watch what they have as bordering on being fatties, the other one is decidedly skinny.all have been wormed .their main feed is chappie but the old one at 16 is a bit fussy and she has a bit of chicken with hers.the skinny one lives on her nerves and has zykene every day and she is much calmer on it but i would like her to look a bit better. any ideas about some food to build her up ,dont really want to give her to much fat in her diet. greatful for any ideas.

Is the Chappie the canned or dry variety? I've found Chappie (canned) to be quite fattening. Having had a couple of nervous skinny dogs in the past I now how tricky it can be to fatten them up, just when you think you're winning they decide to go on hunger strike Have you tried tripe? I know it smells a bit, but they love it and it does seem quite fattening. You may have to feed your skinny one 2-3 times a day, little and often to see any improvement, which may well be a little tricky because your others will want some too. To be honest unless the dog is seriously underweight I wouldn't worry too much, it could well be that the others (if they're a bit chubby) are making this one look worse than it actually is.

i feed the canned chappie and as u say is quite fattening as the others look well.the skinny one does chase about more and is very hypo so i expect like people she burns off her weight, wish i could be like that !!!! she probabley is the weight vets would like to see and as she seems healthy i will not worry to much.

I think puppy food is supposed to be good for skinnies as provides more calories which growing pups need.
As said by idalia though, I wouldn't worry too much about it providing she's not seriously underweight - my Mum used to think my husky was too skinny but when I took her to the vet for annual jab I asked him and he said no, she was the perfect weight - he said most dogs are overweight these days which makes people think that dogs that are the correct weight look too skinny! Same could be said of horses too I suppose!
