I have a couple of friends that use it for their younger horses being bitted or newly started.
I would not turn to it if pony is unhappy in the mouth. It is used to make the bit more comfortable but will not make an uncomfortable bit comfortable (does that make sense)
I would want to find the cause of the pony being uncomfortable in the first place be it teeth, type of bit and possibly the back.

How old is your pony?
We have a 5 & 6 yr old who weren't happy - sent them to be checked by the back man but the problem was their molars.
Now the teeth have erupted they are completely different ponies & working so much better than before!

I have used bit butter on an older horse that would take a hold on the bit. It worked well on her but I obviously continued with her schooling to get her to be more accepting of the contact. It's not a miracle worker, but helped.

He's 8, Welsh sec a. he's had his teeth back saddle checked, and all fine. I've heard good reports with it softening the mouth and helping the horse accept the bit more. I know nothing can replace schooling, but not always easy when rider is only 7, she does a great job with her pony just thought this might help. THe bit wrap worked very well.

Mollymalone which bit butter did you use? I've seen a cheap one by gold label or one from America.

I've never heard of or used bit butter but we did use bit bandage on a pony that didn't seem to accept the bit but it transpired that he had back/muscle problems so nothing to do wiht his mouth at all.
What does your pony do to evade the bit?

I wrap all my bits in latex bit wrap on all my horses, gives them a much softer feel and I think they like it :-)
