Im doing my (and ponies) first novice show at NWC in October. So what are the judges looking for? do they make allowances for fidgeting etc?
also what should i wear? she is a bay mare section d, so what colour tweed would be best suited? should i match my hat to my tweed?

You can't go wrong with a plainish green tweed, will see you through lots of different classes/ponies. A navy hat is always acceptable although some choose different colours e.g. brown or green.

Don't be nervous that she's not good enough. Just enjoy yourselves and remember - no matter what the result, you take the best horse home

thanks guys, think I will go for a green one I want to do workers next season too so I can also use it for this! Would you suggest a matching green hat or a blue one? Im the same Vikki5, she is very novicey and fidgety so Im nervous because the classes get very big! But dont ever think your horse isnt good enough, of course she is

If your tweed has a 'self' coloured collar then any colour hat will be fine. If it has a velvet collar then most people like to match the hat colour to the velvet, but you don't have to. You'll find lots of 'fidgets' in the line ups ...novice or otherwise It's a very pouplar show with an enthusiastic audience (especially in the evening performance), I'm sure you and your mare will have a great time ;D I'll look out for you and cheer you on

Keep your outfit plain - you dont need to spend a fortune when you start out. It's more important to be well fitting - in quiet colours with a nice toning tie and cream or lightly coloured shirt. If your pony is a novice maybe not the best behaved - yet and you have say a pink tie - that is what the judge will remember - the girl on the naughty horse with the pink tie. As you get better sometimes it is good to have something individual ( within reason of couse) as in a big class the judge will remember say the girl with the pink tie on the cob that went well. The main thing is go and enjoy it. We all have to start somewhere with our young ponies and they don't always stand/ go well but for all the work you do at home there is nothing like getting out there for the best practise.good lock and whatever happens enjoy yourself

Aww thanks angelena I often feel scruffy too, I don't do a lot of showing so don't have loads of expensive equipment!
