Just looking for a new equine dentist (a reliable one) and wondered who everyone recommended? I am based in Lancashire NW. I have just been looking at a website and the price seems a little expensive so prices if you can remember would also be nice.

We use Craig Griffiths and we pay £45, he is very good, however it is very difficult to get appointments with him as he is booked up months in advance

Desktop it will be Craig Griffiths, that's the only problem with him, he's great when you actually manage to get him!

vet has always done my mare in the past which i know isn't ideal but she does need sedating so this has always been the easier way,if i use a dentist what happens about sedation ? Do you have to get the vet out to do it ? More money !

We use Mark and even difficult ponies like mine and others on the yard that need sedating with the vet, have never had to be sedated when he has done them. He has a gentle approach and never upsets them.

Have heard good things about him, but Mark isn't a qualified dentist, so if anything went wrong and you needed to claim on the insurance , I don't think you'd be covered. You can find a list of qualified EDT's in your area here: www.beva.org.uk/_uploads/documents/members-list-sept-2011.pdfWe use Ivan Stockdale.

Do you have to get the vet out to do it ? More money ! Having seen Craig work on horses that in that past have needed sedating and are now more than happy to stand still whilst he carries out his work, I would say that if you can find a patient dentist then I am sure you would eleviate the need for sedation

We use Mark-my mare who had been away at stud and not had her teeth done for 2 1/2 years and with the vet ALWAYS needed sedating-when Mark came to do her teeth she saw him and wouldn't let us put the head collar on. Mark went in the stable with her and within a minute he was doing her teeth with no problems. She has previously been done by the vet and he made her gums bleed. Would never use anyone else other than Mark.

You say Mark is not on the list of qualified edt but did he not train craig and he also goes to the equine uni in wales to lecture on dentistry so he must not be that bad a what he does

It used to be that you could not train in the UK and most then trained in the us. It is not a legal requirement i don't think to be a registered equine dentist in the UK, technically anyone could pick up a rasp and call themselves a dentist. The list of UK dentists is a list of those who have passed a UK regulated training course and exam, therefore you know you are getting someone of a certain standard/qualification.
Having said that i have known of mark for years and years and have never heard anything but good. I use my vet though (who is registered) mainly because he is also good, is easy to book, does vaccinations at same time and can easily sedate to remove teeth if required etc.

Rachel Hough who is based in Chorley . She is UK trained. We have had her for the past couple of years after my previous dentist emigrated. We struggled to find someone who knew what they were doing but didn't charge the earth - I had quotes of £60 per pony , and that included a discount for having 6 done ! Would highly recommend Rachel ,very thorough , professional, and excellent with the ponies ( although I did accidentally give her an electric shock last time she came - long story !).I think she charges about £30 per pony but you might be able to haggle if you have a few . Tel 07799 073365
