Im very envious, lost my little cocker spaniel girl earlier this year, she was the dearest, brightest companion and she is desperately missed. I will get another when I finish working. Even though when she was little we had some Labradors she has never been very keen on other dogs around, quite nervous of bigger ones, when my partners dog moved in, an old collie who lived outside Jet want that keen to start with but eventually they used to greet eachother each day then politely ignored eachother! Funnily enough I met a 7 month old girl yesterday who was exactly the same.Jet was forever green until the last 6 months of her life, she loved ger life on the farm and culd jump onto a big bale even when she was 13, I used to clip her about 4 times a year which she wasnt keen on but put up with, she never growled or snapped, I put a little rug on her when it was cold. A bit of a dustbin so not a fussy eater and the day she caught a rat, well she spent the next month telling everyone about it! When I lost my mum Jet insisted on looking in every car for the following 6 months for her.
If you have a quarter of the fun and love that Jet gave me you are going to be very lucky and will have a wonderful addition to your family. x

Awww GillWales that is lovely, cannot wait to share all the happy memories that having a dog will bring, i dont know what it is about the cocker spaniel but every person i have spoke to have said they are so loving and it is really lovely to hear your stories and experiences. I have been thinking about the crate training and im wondering if this is essential to toilet training? i have a smallish area under my stairs that is bigger than a crate so i was wondering if that could be used for his/ her bedroom (haha) with a baby gate on? all opinions welcome.. thanks also to babybem i will have a look now, do you know how much youll be selling the pups for? x

I think a crate is more or less essential your cubby sounds lovely when she/he is bigger but you need a bed size space to house train her/him as they dont usually foul their nest. Other bit f advice would never use puppy pads they train the dog to go in the house . It took me 2 hours to train my labrador pup who has never even offered to go in the house. she has a crate which she treats as her bedroom and is very happy there I am sure there will be others who hate them but I think they are great as they give the pup a safe haven too. My lab is 2 now and is one of the best most biddable dog we have had. Please make sure you check any cocker puppy blood lines for cocker rage usually found in self colours predominantly red ones. Not all line have it and a lot has been bred out but it is a nasty thing to deal with and could cost you your precious dog

Loved my cockers, and managed to house train them all OK without the benefit of a crate as it was before they were used, but would always have one now. Ours were of showing lines, again, some time ago now when there were very few working ones around, which from what I've seen of them are even more energetic than the showing line ones! It might be worth your while to check out the two types and decide which you want to go for before getting one. If you are happy to have an older dog there is a breed rescue for them, as there is for most breeds, which could be worth contacting.

I have to say we never had a crate for our two dogs who were toilet trained very effectively (labrador and collie). They didn't have any area where they were "shut in." The Lab had a simple basket in the kitchen, the collie preferred the floor next to the bed. They both lived to ripe old ages and were extremely well behaved, lovable family pets. I don't know where all this crate stuff came from - never seen them used until my mother-in-law got 2 Yorkies!!

I would think the cocker breed society/club would know of any lines that still carried rage but I do believe it is only in solid colours mostly red ones so maybe a multicoloured one could be the place to start. A good breeder will probably explain all about it to you. I do know it is horrid for the dog and even more so for the owner as they become vicious and out of control almost like a mental illness. It is hereditary so is in certain lines A good breeder should be able to tell you what efforts have been taken to eliminate it in the breed I have never bred cockers just cavaliers, labrador, golden retrievers. german shepherds and newfoundlands over the past 40 years

I can deffinately recommend nanna and grandads cocker puuppies! I have 2 of there dogs that they bred, and they are quality and evverything that is said on the packet. Excellent temperament, reared with no expense spared, and breeding that will not be beaten............... I have lots of comments on both my dogs............
