Im due to send may foal/mare off for weaning..i plan to take the mare straight back home and put her in a new field..the foal will be at my friends for a month or so..my problem is the foal will have to go back out with the dam..i do have the field split..so i could seperate them for the first fwe days when he returns..would this be ok??

I had same problem with my mare and colt, they were seperated for 3months then he went back out with her. He did try to suckle when put back with her even after 3 months but she didnt have any of it. They have been together ever since and he is now 4, he doesnt bother when she goes and he is now very independent. It wasnt ideal but it has worked. Think you would need to seperate as much as you can. I did think about turning foal out during day and mare out at night??? Hope you can sort something good luck

I think i will put them in seperate fields next to each other for a while..they will be able to touch each other over the gate but he wont be able to suckle.. the mare will have to into the new field on her own as iv nothing to put with her..bit of a pain

My foal last year went from weaning to the producer, she was gone 6 mths and when she came back she went out with the other young ones. At 14mth old i changed fields which meant she went out with her dam, at 18mths old she still tries to suckle but mum won't let her. I think they always remember, but i'm sure your dam will sort her out

When I weaned Bridget's second foal I sent her with her yearling sister to a nearby livery yard for a month, then reunited the three of them. Daisy did try to suckle at first, but Bridget wasn't having any of it. They were all together 24/7 after that except when Bridget was being ridden - they all shared a stable as well as a paddock - but never had any problems with them.

My mare wet to my instructors to bring her back into work whilst we weaned my boy......She came back after a month, to which they were both seperated and he had his little pal in with him. They were seperate all winter and the following summer then at the back end I put the both in together (approx 12 months after weaning) and I haven't had one problem, he didn't even try to suckle, but he was and is a very independant chap.

It may not be the norm but I know one mare who had totally dried up but came straight back into milk when she was reunited with her by then big baby! So I'd go careful and keep them apart as long as possible.
