If the mare was liver chestnut the foal would be palomino, so looks probable that the mare is black or (more likely) smokey black in which case the foal is buckskin Mind you my youngster was born buckskin (bay x buckskin parents) and is now black

Is the sire tested cremello or is that just shorthand for double dilute? And has he got a grey parent and/or been tested for the grey gene? My first reaction was buckskin possibly going grey, hence the questions on the sire.

Don't know him I'm afraid.
Correctly, cremello is double dilute chestnut, whereas double dilute bay is called perlino and dd black is smokey cream, although they can be very difficult to distinguish by eye and all are often erroneously labelled cremello. It is possible for any with a grey parent to carry grey without it being visible to the eye, but they can then sire foals that start off single dilute but grey out, often to the owner's surprise.

As he is would be better described as buckskin (ie dilute bay), I very very much doubt he is dun which is a different gene altogether.
He will of course carry a dilute gene as his sire is double dilute, I wondered if he would go grey because the bits that I'd expect to be black look more of a mousey muddy grey in your photo - I know from experience that grey and dilute together do give some very funny colour changes, often involving that sort of muddy grey/brown.

I have a friend who covered her liver chestnut mare with a cremello Sec C stallion..the resulting colt whilst a very nice horse is the oddest colour - if he was a dog he would be described as brindle ;D
