My friend bought a lovely 2 year old two months ago. He has been going fine, had a few walks out with other horses on the lead and wasn't fazed by anything. He went behind and also took the lead so he was doing a variety. This pony was ridden and in a cart at 18mths old he was used as the scrap pony. He was then rescued and turned away but did go out for walks on long reins still.
Today after not going out for a while we decided to take mine & pony out for a little walk, not far out of the gate he started to rear and buck, he would walk on a bit further then do it again. He was horrible he almost kicked a car and we had to stop all the traffic. Got him back on the yard he was fine.
The owner has been working on teaching him ground manners and space which has gone well apart from he has started shutting down and planting his feet. I wonder if she is 'over fazing' him with work?
The only change is that he's on feed, she gives him 100g of top spec stud mix, a scoop of alfa lami & a carrot. Now I know their is 13g of sugar in one carrot so told her ditch it and cut him right down. She wants me to take him out tomorrow for a walk but if he gets hurt or hits a car then he's not insured.
What do you think is going on?

Too much too soon. Turn him away for the winter to be a horse. Only catch him up to have his feet and wormer done and a few grooms in between and basically let him grow up. Get rid of any cereal in his feed and give him a hay diet which if he is a bit skinny can be supplemented with an alfa oil, linseed, A&P calm and condition and a vitamin supplement like alpha bites or a suitable cereal free balancer He is probably changing teeth so anything on or near his jaw will hurt and he has already been over faced by being ridden and driven so young. Make sure he is always obedient and calm and if you do anything at all which I would say would be a mistake always finish on a good note. taking him back to the yard when he was naughty was a small mistake he should have been asked to go forward a few steps to turn so he didnt get the idea if he messed about he got to go home. I know it is difficult in traffic but perhaps if you insist on doing stuff with him it should be round the yard and school for a while where you can get him going forward all the time

Cut the High Octane food out ! He's feeling on top of the world and showing it. All horses try us out to see what they can get away with. Take it very steady and very slowly. Good Luck xx.

Would never keep any horse uninsured 3rd party. Don't even think about it. Tell her to get him insured straight away!!!! At least be a member of the BHS - so you're covered under their third policy! Regarding the pony get him off all that feed and let him be a pony in a field with his buddies and be scruffy and muddy for the winter.

Thanks. I thought the same 'too much too soon' I have just turned mine 3 yr old away to mature. She doesn't have any knowledge of bringing on a youngster so asks my advise all the time. I thought a little walk would be ok as he hadn't done anything for a long time obviously it wasn't the right thing at that time. She did finish on a good note, I told her to stand him at the gate for a few minutes and he was fine.
I have told her to get him off the feed and as he is under weight to put him on something like allen & page, calm & condition.
She did say she's getting him insured with him almost kicking the car with kids inside.

Best thing to do is turn him away and only do essentials and a few nice things with him and let him play leave him at least 18 months to forget his bad start and then always teach him to go forward A minimum of third party insurance is a necessity too lots of cheap ways of getting it but they are usually last resort types of insurance BDS is the cheapest of these at about 35 pounds

Have to agree he has done to much to soon, sounds like he is objecting which is understandable. tell her to turn him away and let him grow and have fun. Its a huge pet hate of mine doing to much to young think it makes things difficult in the future (not blaming your friend, but the previous owners).
I know this had been due to the previous owners (shame on them), but he is still young enough to become a well balanced young horse, if he is just turned away over winter.
Good luck wish your friend all the best xx
