My little jack Russell was diagnosed with kidney failure in August but is on tablets and a renal diet and is doing ok (ish). However, he really doesn't like the food and is desperately hungry. I'm worried about feeding him anything else as I worry about his kidneys. The other problem we have is that he has irritable bowel syndrome so any kind of meat gives him a very poorly tummy Does anyone have any ideas of anything else I could feed him, just treat wise even that won't make him poorly? I'm almost at the point of thinking about having him put to sleep as he is losing weight (and is also going a little senile.....) Sad times in my house

So sorry for you, we lost our 18 month old labrador to congenital kidney failure we were devastated as she was my soul mate We lost her very fast though, she became anaemic, very slim, weed a lot and was sick a lot. She went onto tablets and specialist dog food which being a lab she ate but it wasn't enough to sustain her really. The problem is they have to virtually cut out protein which makes substituting for the medical diet very hard. Sorry I can't be the bearer of better news or an alternative plan for you but with our girl we knew she didn't have long. The vet said she wasn't in pain and would be OK for a little while longer but one morning her eyes just said it all so we made the decision for her. So sad x

Rockstar I'd ask your vet about possible supplements that may help him, and high protein treats that will help him without upsetting his tummy. I'm sorry to hear your dog is not well. We have a rabbit who can't tolerate certain veg as it gives her a runny tummy also.

Nia NEVER give a dog with kidney failure HIGH protein - that's what turns into toxins they can't digest and it will poison them.
There is some debate that there are certain proteins ok for certain dogs in the US it's being tested, but I can speak from experience on this one any protein that my dog had sent her into a rapid decline.

Sorry I confess I didn't read the original post properly. Bad me. No, I agree, higher protein is bad. I should have said higher calorie. I will read things properly in future

I had a Boxer with kidney failure, she was 13. The vet gave her an injection to boost her kidneys and for a few days she seemed almost back to normal but soon went downhill again so I made the decision to call it a day Totally devastated but had to do what was best for my girl and I didn't want her to suffer, she deserved to go with dignity. Haggis is right kidney failure and high protein food simply don't go together. Rockstar I really feel for you, can't suggest any suitable food but im sure your vet can. If he is an old dog as hard as it is asses his quality of life....... Big hugs

so sorry Rockstar... you need a low protien diet with a better fat and carb intake... good quality protien is better such as eggs, and chicken.....
talk to your vet for advice... they are the experts.....
