Fresh from HOYS Twitter page... New divisions for the Mountain & Moorland Working Hunter Pony classes at Horse of the Year Show, “The World’s Most Famous Horse Show”, are due to come into effect at the start of the 2013 qualifying season. Announced back in July, the three existing sections will be replaced by four sections with new fence heights and spreads. The changes are to create a more equal playing field, in which the innate athletic ability of each breed is considered, rather than its height exclusively. As part of the continual process to provide the best experience possible for all involved in the show, Grandstand Media Ltd, organiser of Horse of the Year Show, has announced a revision to the planned changes, regarding the fence height in the smallest height section. Following common feedback from breed societies, course builders and competitors, the new fence height in the 122cm section will be increased by 5cm in the qualifying rounds (up to 70cm) and championship round (up to 75cm). It was concluded that the fence height had been lowered by too much during the initial changes and it is hoped that this alteration will strike the right balance between giving each breed the best chance of jumping the course, while not suppressing their true abilities. From 2013, the minimum and maximum heights, and maximum spreads for the courses at the Championship and at qualifying shows, will be as follows:

lancs the height has been altered since the first announcement, and the second change is only to the 122cms sections as most people felt the jumps were too small (smaller than the current height)
so the first announcement was this
HOYS Championship Height:
Section Height (Min) Height (Max) Spread (Max) Not Exc. 122cm 60cm 70cm 60cm Exc. 122cm; Not exc. 133cm 70cm 85cm 70cm Exc. 133cm; Not exc. 143cm 80cm 95cm 80cm Exc. 143cm 90cm 105cm 90cm
HOYS Qualifier Height:
Section Height (Min) Height (Max) Spread (Max) Not Exc. 122cm 55cm 65cm 55cm Exc. 122cm; Not exc. 133cm 65cm 80cm 65cm Exc. 133cm; Not exc.143cm 75cm 90cm 75cm Exc. 143cm 85cm 100cm 85cm
the the alter height for the 122cms goes to this
Horse of the Year Show Championship Height:
Section Height (Min) Height (Max) Spread (Max) Not Exc. 122cm 60cm 75cm 60cm Exc. 122cm; Not exc. 133cm 70cm 85cm 70cm Exc. 133cm; Not exc. 143cm 80cm 95cm 80cm Exc. 143cm 90cm 105cm 90cm
Horse of the Year Show Qualifier Height:
Section Height (Min) Height (Max) Spread (Max) Not Exc. 122cm 55cm 70cm 55cm Exc. 122cm; Not exc. 133cm 65cm 80cm 65cm Exc. 133cm; Not exc.143cm 75cm 90cm 75cm Exc. 143cm 85cm 100cm 85cm

Sadly, I still think the heights in the 3rd and 4th class divisions will be beyond many Fells and Highlands which is a shame. There will be the exception that can manage it, but it's a shame to exclude so many from a particular breed rather than try to even up the breed representatives at the final. I would rather see something similar to the RIHS rule where the Fells and Highlands are permitted to jump with the previous class. 95 cms for a 13.1hh Fell pony is a big ask! Having said that I do have a Fell that seems to enjoy jumping that will likely measure in just under 13hh.

Does anyone know where pictures of hoys qualifers for whp can be found (im a little sad and would like to see the fences that they use to try and practice at home)... Eg) Does anyone know if they like white gates etc? The ones at the final are a bit quirky so wanting to see if these are in the qualifying rounds too?

Depends whose jumps they use eg David Norlander & Rachel Turner usually bring their own fences.
Best suggestion is to look at shows that hold qualifiers & then try to look at last year's show photos for some idea, although normally the show photographer picks a couple of straightforward fences to cover, so that everyone will have their picture taken.

The M&Ms are split into 4 height sections. The first list forester gives are the old heights then the heights of fences at Hoys then heights at qualifier rounds. Hope this helps. What height is your pony?
