Can anybody recommend the best type of Pelham to use for a native? (NF)

I prefer a double as you get much better refinement. My thick tonuged Connie is hunting in one at the moment and is very happy in it. Just make sure you use a weymouth with a small port and as thin a mouth piece as possible and that the bradoon is also as thin as possible.

Have considered a double but I doubt my pony would like having the 2 bits in his mouth, it's going to be a case of trial and error with him.

I would just try a simple pelham with whatever moutpiece his snaffle has at first. He will probably suprised you about the double but would try a pelham first

Ive always found the vulcanite straight bars a success as a first pelham, with a nice leather curb chain.

I thought the same with mine as he's always had to have the thinnest mouthpiece available and does have a big tongue, tried it on an off chance as it's something I had lying around and he's very happy in it, more so than any pelham I'd tried previously. It does need to be introduced gradually though of course.

I would definitely aim for the double bridle, a far superior tool to the pelham for most animals. However, if you need a pelham for thick-tongued native, I have used with great success two different types of mylers.

Mine hates pelhams with a passion esp straight bars. He just fixes his head and there was no softness. Put him in a double and never looked back. I use to ride him in a loose ring french link snaffle at the yard for every day :-)

If he/she is light in the mouth and has brakes maybe try a rugby pelham where as if your pony is strong and tends to get exited maybe try a pelham with a port

A properly fitted rugby with the extra slip head looks better for showing if you intend to do that and a double won't work for the particular pony.
